Congrats to all who made the cut so far ! So are we thinking March class is full at this point ? No. IF the goal is 50, 15 were hired before and this round we have 17 so far. That leaves 18 more if the 50 is correct.

That leaves 18 more if the 50 is correct. subject, of course, to the unknown of whether or not candidates who accepted offers are not on this board. . . . So far, we have been capturing about 90% or better when comparing past polls to the actual information about class size. So that still leaves several more spots. I think the issue is that people are not able to answer the call right away or have to use all or part of the 24 hours to say yes or no. Hence the lull we have now and then.

And a temporary pox on Gaidin! Those mutton chops cannot be unseen!!! I have always had a visceral dislike of that song (probably the arguably misogynistic lyrics) and never knew who sang it, but that is exactly how I would have pictured them if I had spent the energy to do so. Turns out the name Mungo Jerry is inspired by T.S. Elliot (so at least there's that), and the singer seems to be a rather decent person. British, which I would not have guessed. Ok, pox lifted! I honestly have never listened to the lyrics so if they caused a pox I am glad it was short lived. I kinda dig the guys 'chops. I sort of imagine that if funkyodar had quit shaving 1/2 way through before his SI this is what it would have looked like.

Too bad (for us anyway) that it's a federal snow day. We won't get any tea leaves to read until tomorrow about whether the March class is full or not. (If there are no calls reported tomorrow, I think it's full.)

Probably true Northbend, probably true as long as the office is open.

Thanks to all the good wishes on my offer. So if I decline this offer then I go to the bottom of the list? or what? I believe the current rule is that you are eliminated from consideration for that location for the life of the current register. Pixie.

Thanks to all the good wishes on my offer. So if I decline this offer then I go to the bottom of the list? or what? I would not decline the offer. According to the supposed policy, you would just not be able to land another ALJ position in that city. Remember, you can always put in for a transfer after 90 days, although no guarantees exist you would be able to get one immediately. You might be stuck there for a while. However, you might have a larger problem already, if you have not officially accepted the position within 24 hours you would be considered to have declined it. Now, if you said yes and now you want to change your mind, that could lead to future issues and possibly not being picked up again. Acceptance and then a declination is a whole other ball of wax. Nobody knows for sure what the ultimate outcome would be. I suggest you contact SSA or whomever called you with the offer and speak to them about your options. Good luck!

Thanks to all the good wishes on my offer. So if I decline this offer then I go to the bottom of the list? or what? Here's what SSA said on this subject on the form asking whether I was still willing to go to a certed city within my GAL: * If you decline a location(s), OPM will remove your name from futher consdideration for that location(s). * You will not be able to reinstate a location for which you have been removed until the next ALJ vacancy announcement open period. * If you decline two (2) job offers, your name will be suspended from OPM's ALJ register for one (1) year or until the register is terminated, whichever occurs first.

Thanks to all the good wishes on my offer. So if I decline this offer then I go to the bottom of the list? or what? So ... let me understand. You reported getting the offer for West Des Moines on Feb. 13. Did you already accept and are now considering changing your mind? Or did you ever answer them within the 24 hour period? I am confused about your question. MPD pointed out an important issue with the 24 hour period to respond.
I think either way, if you already accepted and then decide to decline... that would be very bad for any potential offers in the future. As much as I would LOVE for you to decline (I want Des Moines)... I cannot imagine this would be viewed favorably at this point.
If you never responded to the 24 hour call... you may be SOL and do not even know it.
EDIT: I am not sure about the timing on this with the 24 hour turnaround. Your offer was reported on a Friday and not sure if that 24 hours applies to the weekend or business days... and now we have a closure due to weather. So you may not be out of luck! This is an unusual situation due to the weekend, holiday, and now weather closure.

Does the information received from ODAR about offers indicate anything about what "24 hours" means in terms of an offer on a Friday?

As the offers' are by phone or email and thus duly noted time and date somewhere, gov't speak generally means 24 hrs starting from that time/date stamp. But the weekend and snowday is an unknown twist.
As regards offer and then declination of same. I would agree that would not bode well for such an applicant. An ALJ position is a multimillion dollar position. Not only in terms of salary, but benefits, and then the physical placements, travel expenses (if applicable) training expenses, then the setting up in the selected offices, possibly new equipment, assigning personnel to that ALJ, setting up computers, then starting to set up casefiles, hearings etc. Each of these activites requires multiple personnel, equipment, overhead and time i.e., money.
Unless there is some good cause for declination (death, illness, catastrophic events..) I would not advise one to do so either.

formeraj, if the offer was made on a Friday, you have until Monday. If Monday is a holiday, you have until Tuesday. If Tuesday is a federal snow day and ODAR is closed, you have until Wednesday. At least, that's the way time is calculated in federal practice. I don't see how they can hold you to conveying your decision via voicemail. So, you've been very lucky in that you've had all this time to consider the offer. As gary posted above, if you decline a city, you will be removed from that city for future consideration, until the Register is refreshed or a new one is started. If you intend to decline this offer, and there are other cities on your certs that you wouldn't accept, I suggest you call ODAR and tell them you would not consider those cities. That way you won't get yourself suspended by being in a position to decline two offers. If you have had a change in circumstances since the certs came out that necessitate declining certain locations, tell ODAR that. You never know how much discretion they have in moving the puzzle pieces. All joking aside (although that case of wine is still on the table), do what is best for you and your family. Sometimes life happens and you have to change plans. Good luck.

If your circumstances have changed such that West Des Moines is no longer a viable option I think you should contact ODAR ASAP and let them know that you have to decline but because of a change in circumstances. While we all want the job not every opportunity is workable any longer. Sometimes life just throws us a curveball. Good luck.
