I just saw the offer news. It's been a very long time coming. If there has been one consistency to the register it's that offers are always later than anticipated.
Good luck to you all! This is the worst part of the whole process after the marathon you've run. I'm rooting for some of you individually but for a class of 50 for all of you!
I can't fathom what question would flummox Bob at this stage. There have been multiple hires and I think every permutation would have already been addressed. I don't think asking for a delayed start date is the issue. They had a short answer to that in June.
But for those waiting, I can't imagine the PTB would delay the offers until Tuesday at this juncture to satisfy one offeree. Melinda is more than capable of keeping the ball rolling.
Enjoy the weekend and may Monday bring you the words, "Hi, this is Melinda from SSA."

You never know what questions could come up. Delayed starts, ADA issues with the specific office, or issues about a non conforming office. Who knows. Bottom line is until these issues are resolved the offers will stack up. Have your phones at the ready and do your part by answering quickly! Good luck all!

This is one time when a call starting, "I'm from the government and I'm here to help you," won't be snicker-worthy.

Keeping my fingers crossed for all who have interviewed and are just waiting for that Bob/Melinda call. Good luck!

Gotta admit I am a little flummoxed by this. If it's an ADA issue, rest assured government office space is compliant. If it's a nonconforming office question, it's gonna be a writers office. Smaller than a typical judge office but, despite our jokes here, it won't be some broom closet.
If it's a salary issue, if you had a prior fed job and made more than an alj 3A in that position, I've heard of no one that didn't get the opm described bump.
If it's relo, if you are a current fed you get it. If not, you don't.
What other questions could one have? You selected the city you have been offered 2 years ago on your GAL. You reconfirmed your desire to go there when you sent the cert list back not all that long ago. If all the above is known....what's the hold up. Poop or get off the pot. We need help, and a lot of it. Over a million folks are lined up for hearings. And you won't have two years to make a decision in their cases.
Maybe I'm missing something.... or just ill this morning.

I can conceive of one special circumstance that has never come up that might flummox the PTB, but two... on the same day? Given how many times I have been passed my interest in the process is becoming more academic, but this is interesting.

maybe they have to start after october 1st. i know there are ways to do that but the hod would likely need to be on board for that. and i think the main way to do this is "start" before oct 1st and then use leave without pay until you can actually start.

One of these folks pm'ed me to clarify that they accepted the job but had a question about the start date. I have not heard anything from the other person.

When someone gets the call, s/he has to make a major life decision that affects not only the applicant but probably his or her family for a long time. Although everyone has picked their GAL, no one knows until they get the call when the start date will be. For some, especially those in the private sector, this can raise many problems and questions. I would not admonish, pressure, castigate or otherwise make anyone else uncomfortable for taking care of themselves in a situation like this. We have not signed up for the military here. I've never seen a personnel system that works like this and it does not work well. If people think they are being held up because someone needs a day or two to gather information before making a decision, they ought to blame the agencies that created the problem.

Does anyone know if ODAR offers student loan assistance, and if so, does one need to request it before accepting an offer?

You make am excellent point LD. People should take time to make a major life changing decision. Like the time they took 2 years ago when they decided to apply. Or maybe the time they took to discuss the cities they certed for when they ranked them. Or maybe the time between when they interviewed and when offers came out and they undoubtedly pondered the issues of what they would do if they got the call.
So start date was unknown. Perhaps. But anyone who has read this board knew what the planned start dates were. Notice? Again, everyone reading this board knows the report from offer periods are generally short and sometimes shorter than others. Maybe they haven't found the board? I suppose. But I find it hard to believe anyone serious about applying didn't at least google the words "alj job." Its exceedingly easy to find this community if you do. And there is no other source of as much info.
You are right, of course, this isnt the military and the personnel process blows. But it also isn't private practice. There are budgeting and fiscal year constraints unique to the government and we'll discussed here.
Offerees are granted 24 hours. If you need it take it. But, if you honestly want this job, but would say no if they don't give you an extra two weeks to report....well, don't be surprised if the agency takes the same stance and responds we need you now, as part of this fiscal and aren't even budgeted for bringing anyone on after 9/30 so take it or leave it. Its all one of the charms of working for the gov, one of many which those from private practice backgrounds will have to adjust to. No time like the present to come to terms with the fact that you and your needs are respected, but subjugated to the needs of the gov.
My own opinion and, again, if you need the 24 hours you are given, no fault in taking it. It just irks me that the agency has real need and had a plan to meet it but have been jammed both on the front end by opm and the hack and on the back end by people who have repeatedly said they wanted the gig now needing time to think about it. And, if you think the powers that be in FC don't notice those that hold up the plan, I assure you you're wrong.

Does anyone know if ODAR offers student loan assistance, and if so, does one need to request it before accepting an offer? All agencies can offer it in recruitment but I think if it was offered it would have been mentioned in the benefits section of the announcement. Its a rarely given benefit, usually for med fields as I understand it. There is no need to offer it when the job is as highly sought and competitive as this. You will qualify for the gov service loan forgiveness. But you have to work 10 years and make payments on an approved plan like the income based repayment plans to get it.

And, if you think the powers that be in FC don't notice those that hold up the plan, I assure you you're wrong. [ When I accepted my current position over six years ago, my new agency didn't even really want me to take two weeks to start. I asked to give my current employer more than two weeks as I felt that was the considerate thing to do, but my new agency wanted me "Right now." In fact, they backdated my hire date because they were anticipating a hiring freeze and didn't want to miss the ability to hire by waiting until the next pay period started. I gave my employer two weeks notice and wrote 52 orders in 11 days (all timely, no backlog) so that I could accept my new job and stay in the good graces of my old employer. My old employer has been a great reference for my promotions and for this SSA job. If hired by SSA, I am willing to do the same thing, i.e. give only two weeks notice but get all my work done . Employers can only reasonably expect two weeks notice. If they failed to train others to do your job while you were there, that is their mistake. And I agree with Funky. You've had all the time in the world already to know whether you want the job if it is offered. So…… Call me Bob and Melinda! I will say yes and I will be there in two weeks!

As funky has stated, you make a few good points, liz. I came to the ALJ Corps from private practice, (no surprise there). How much you wanna bet the person in question has not really studied the Board and comes from private practice? Those who come from US Government service and particularly from ODAR have a point of view that none of us from private practice had. It was a loooong assimilation process for me and fraught with all kinds of "get outta here" comments i made to myself. So this new hiring paradigm will allow for a hold-up or two or three. Better in Puzzle Palace's view than a premature quit.

It is hard to unenroll kids and begin a new school. At least there is time during the summer to worry about it, but the fall can be hard times for moving.
