Keen is from Fla? I thought he was Texan! I idolize this guy! Of course, apparently not enough to research his origins. Thought I'd pick that up from his lyrics! You can never get too much Keen in your diet!

You can never get too much Keen in your diet! No he is a Texan. He is from Houston. The drug deal in the song takes place in Miami and I love the song too much to wait for Houston.

South Florida Miami, Ft. Myers, and Ft. Lauderdale For our Florida musical selections I give you: Miami Sound Machine Robert Earl Keen Jimmy Buffett It is 84 and partly cloudy in Miami this afternoon. It's a shame ODAR doesn't have a Key West office. I would be all over that location.

I am very excited that our GAL Expansion City of the Day takes us to Florida this week. If we have the opportunity to change our GAL's, I am removing from consideration anywhere where it snows, and adding every location in Florida. I would like to claim a spot in Key West when ba persuades ODAR to open the Mallory Square Office. I feel certain that there are people hanging out on Duval Street who have disability claims that need adjudicating.

Gaiden, no Celia Cruz? No Cuban Sandwich reference as part of the Miami reference? Fuhgeddaboudit! My knowledge of South Florida's music scene is based entirely on Jimmy Buffett and Miami Vice. I am happy that someone is stepping in to fill my gaps in knowledge.

Central Florida Orlando, Tampa, St. Petersburg
So interestingly enough both the Backstreet Boys and N'Sync were from central Florida.
Central Florida is also of course the home of the East Coast House of Mouse. I think the transformation of Orlando because of Walt Disney's vision is one of the great American stories. You can like it or hate it but its effect is awe inspiring. I'm in the like it camp BTW.

North Florida Jacksonville and Tallahassee
Tallahassee is kind of a dead end musically. T-Pain is from there but I honestly can't think of a single SFW T-Pain song. Jacksonville on the other hand was a surprise. Every now and then in this review I run across a city with to many musicians to get them all in. Jacksonville is such a place.
Lynyrd Skynyrd was formed there with the Van Zant brothers being natives. Probably my favorite Skynyrd song.
Gary U. S. Bonds
Pat Boone
Scott McKenzie who we first encountered in San Francisco.
Vic Chestnutt with perhaps the most haunting song I know. If you have ever known someone (or perhaps are someone) who battles depression this song will echo for you.
Rick Dees because I don't want to leave you on a down note.

Jim Morrison attended FSU in Tallahassee; Cannonball Adderley and his brother Nat grew up in Tallahassee and Creed was formed by FSU undergrads in Tallahassee.

South Florida Miami, Ft. Myers, and Ft. Lauderdale For our Florida musical selections I give you: Jimmy Buffett Ummm. G...I gather you put Jimmy on the Miami/South Florida list for his vibe. But, I would be remiss if i let it slide without pointing out that Buffett was born in Pascagoula, Mississippi and graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg. That's right....parrotheads are yet another musical genre that owes it all to the great state of Mississippi. King of Rock n Roll, born in Mississippi. Father of country music (jimmy Rodgers) also from Miss. Blues? Please....from the moment Robert Johnsonsold his soul in the Mississippi Delta this state has been the launching pad of all of America's music. Just saying....

Funky,
At the risk of being branded a giddy 13 year old, I will simply point out that Taylor Swift was born in the great Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, as was the award-winning Pink. Just saying....

95% of all the great bluesmen came from the State of Mississippi-Muddy Waters, Howling Wolf, Jimmy Reed and hundreds more. Ok, so Freddy King came from Texas; that's close to Mississippi.
Edit: And how could I have left out B.B. King, the greatest blues guitar player of all time? Some musicians will argue that point, but I think all agree that B.B. had the the best tone of all the greats.

My favorite Skynard song next to Freebird is the Ballad of Curtis Loew. I hope it posts okay from my phone.

Rick Dees because I don't want to leave you on a down note. In the interest of completeness Jacksonville is also the home of Fred Durst and Rap/Metal band Limp Bizkit. Given the demographics of the board their day in the sun (late 90s to mid 00's) probably came and went without many being too aware of them, and those of us who were probably aren't that nostaligic. However they are the last big time act to come out of Jacksonville. Also I believe the actress Kristen Stewart is from there. Those of us who have done a hitch in the Navy have probably had the opportunity to either visit NAS Jax or Naval Station Mayport. In character Jacksonville is much more South Georgia, than Florida. Geographically Jacksonville encompasses the whole of Duval county and is larger than LA, but without the population, making it probably the best (worst?) example of urban sprawl in the U.S. Returning to the subject of music, the place to see live music in Jacksonville is (assuming it is still open) appropriately enough "Freebirds" down by the beach.

We will discuss Mississippi when we get there but you certainly make an excellent point about Mr. Buffett. Although most of the Gulf Coast can lay claim to his music. I assure you I will highlight him again when we get to Mississippi.
