I'm late to the thread but I had to add my 2 cents. I'm a June hire from New England banished to southern California. I have to say that as much as I love Paul Simon, he missed the mark here. I don't need to meet one interesting person here and I will still have a hard time heading back east.
Lyrics
My time coming, any day, don't worry bout me, no Been so long I felt this way, ain't in no hurry, no Rainbows end down that highway where ocean breezes blow My time coming, voices saying, they tell me where to go
Don't worry bout me, no no, don't worry bout me, no And I'm in no hurry, no no no, I know where to go.
California, preaching on the burning shore California, I'll be knocking on the golden door Like an angel, standing in a shaft of light Rising up to paradise, I know I'm gonna shine
My time coming, anyday, don't worry bout me, no It's gonna be just like they say, them voices tell me so Seems so long I felt this way and time sure passin' slow Still I know I lead the way, they tell me where I go
Don't worry bout me, no no, don't worry bout me, no And I'm in no hurry, no no no, I know where to go
California, a prophet on the burning shore California, I'll be knocking on the golden door Like an angel, standing in a shaft of light Rising up to paradise, I know I'm gonna shine
You've all been asleep, You would not believe me Them voices telling me, You will soon receive me We're standing on the beach, The sea will part before me (Fire wheel burning in the air) And you will follow me, And we will ride to glory (Way up the middle of the air)
And I'll call down thunder And speak the same And my word fills the sky with flame And might and glory gonna be my name And men gonna light my way
My time coming, anyday, don't worry bout me, no It's gonna be just like they say, them voices tell me so Seems so long I felt this way and time sure passin slow My time coming, anyday, don't worry about me, no
Don't worry about me...
I included the lyrics because they should inspire all of you just behind me who I hope to welcome on the next hire. May it be California or wherever you want most. It can't come soon enough!

Because once you start looking at the California ODAR offices on a map you realize many of them are geographically fairly close and should sort of be lumped into LA for purposes of discussion. Clearly each of these communities is different and special in its own way but there are lots of offices left to sort through. So today I will close out LA by mentioning Orange, San Bernadino, Pasadena, and Moreno Valley. I only visited California once. I was treated to an all expenses paid trip to Fort Irwin. My Guard unit was actually stationed at the abandoned air base in Victorville and I got to commute to Ft. Irwin every day. So my view of soutrhern California looked like this: www.flickr.com/photos/saxxon57/3699000533/in/album-72157621109385704/Since that time I generally only hear about the LA suburbs when something catches on fire or washes away in one the infrequent rain storms. But today's musical selection is one of my all time favorite songs about freedom and also So. Cal.

From a Ga boy i believe?? We should also add him to our musical choices for GA too or add him when we get to wherever the heck he is from. i am already scouring B-52 videos to "help" you when we get to Ga! and no wonder you are leery about SoCal!!! i had a relative in your part of SoCal shall we say and then he got stationed in San Diego. He PREFERS San Diego!!!

The GA locations should be heavy on REM and the B52s.
Tom Petty is from Gainesville, FL although I have heard (but cannot find it now) that Freefallin was written about a girl from GA.

Agreed on Ga picks! maybe shiny happy people and some of both groups at same time and let's not forget Otis Reading and Gladys and the Pips, the Ray Charles song. Dang, Ga is going to be as packed as the LA musical options!

I knowwww, he has nothing to do with Seattle music BUT he is from Wash state and all the girls, including myself, will thank me for it!! note to self: make all offices in Wash state my top choices

Before we bid adieu to the LA area I would be remiss if I did not mention the prevalence of shark attacks and for Orange County in particular the presence of one particularly vicious and maneating seal:

San Diego, CA (catching up from yesterday)
Not the number 1 city on my list by any means but considered by many to be the finest city in these United States. Arguing against that is the relative dearth of songs about it. Also the Chargers are awful. The only song specifically about San Diego I could find.
San Diego /ˌsæn diːˈeɪɡoʊ/ is a major city in California, on the coast of the Pacific Ocean in Southern California, approximately 120 miles (190 km) south of Los Angeles and immediately adjacent to the border with Mexico.
With an estimated population of 1,381,069 as of July 1, 2014,[9] San Diego is the eighth-largest city in the United States and second-largest in California. San Diego is the birthplace of California[11] and is known for its mild year-round climate, natural deep-water harbor, extensive beaches, long association with the U.S. Navy, and recent emergence as a healthcare and biotechnology development center.
Historically home to the Kumeyaay people, San Diego was the first site visited by Europeans on what is now the West Coast of the United States. Upon landing in San Diego Bay in 1542, Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo claimed the entire area for Spain, forming the basis for the settlement of Alta California 200 years later. The Presidio and Mission of San Diego, founded in 1769, formed the first European settlement in what is now California. In 1821, San Diego became part of newly independent Mexico, and in 1850, became part of the United States following the Mexican–American War and the admission of California to the union.
The city is the seat of San Diego County and is the economic center of the region as well as the San Diego–Tijuana metropolitan area. San Diego's main economic engines are military and defense-related activities, tourism, international trade, and manufacturing. The presence of the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), with the affiliated UCSD Medical Center, has helped make the area a center of research in biotechnology.
