recently moved from Jericho to Central Islip As a native Long Islander, I can say that's a huge change in location, especially with LI traffic. I feel bad for any ALJ or ODAR staff member who bought their house, etc., depending on the Jericho location. For the insiders, are ODAR office location moves a routine occurrence?

Not routine, but they do happen. The office in Montgomery, AL has been in three different locations in the past 15 or so years. Leases are normally signed for 10 years with contingency clauses.

It's also not something that happens quickly. We usually have a pretty good idea that locations are going to change years in advance. It's a multi year process to find space and modify it to comport with our needs. It'll be interesting to see how things change as more and more leases near their expiration with the GAO's request (mandate?) that we not increase our footprint while we also expand the corps.

Reducing the footprint in the field while adding judges is not very difficult. Even if every judge continues to maintain an office, there is still a lot of empty space. The staff ratio at one time was 4+ staff for every judge. With the development of the national writing and pulling centers, I predict that number will be whittled away for the field offices for support staff. So instead of 11 judges with 44+ support staff, we may have under 30 support staff. The writing, pulling and maybe even the scheduling will be outsourced to the national centers.
No one will be terminated or RIF'd. The jobs will simply not be filled to allow the offices to attrite down to the smaller sizes.

If I have Jericho on my GAL, will they treat me as having selected Central Islip, I wonder?

I would say most likely, but Bob or Mellinda could tell you for sure.

I got a list of the cities the small August class was hired for and thought I would share. Newark, NJ Bronx, NY*3 Orland Park, IL Evanston, IL Akron, OH Detroit, MI St. Louis, MO San Jose, CA Portland, ORĀ *2 I thought the Portland OR waiting list was rather long. If so, was this a wonderfully rare event?
