There are all kinds on the boards, some who are more than happy to disclose their identity (so much so that they announce it at FC), some who will disclose when asked, and some who would not disclose their board identity if you paid them.
While the board can provide a false sense of intimacy with other posters, please remember to respect the level of anonymity that each person wants to have.

And to emphasize the point, if you want to know if someone is a specific board identity do NOT ask out loud in a group situation like in the middle of the office for example. That puts the person on the spot in front of others. Be discreet!

As to protection of board identity, all of you need to know that ALJD and I are committed to member anonymity. The only way we will divulge any personal information, such as email addresses, names or IP addresses is by court order. I don't see that happening in my lifetime.
Occasionally, I will edit posts by new (and unsophisticated members) to delete or change identifying information, and send the member a PM explaining what I have done. Many of you have received my messages. Invariably I get a "Thank you, I never thought of that."
Another example is the situation where a member has been selected for a class and she is trying to identify other board members who will be in her class who have sent me a PM asking me to post the location without attribution. She sends me a PM asking for that information. Rather than replying with the requested information, I forward her message to her future classmates and let them make the decision whether to reply. Many of you have received this type of message from me as well. I think all have responded and have gotten to "know" each other prior to meeting in Falls Church. There are other board members who have been entrusted with this type of information who are completely trustworthy. Gaidin, Gary and JudgeRatty come to mind.
As ba raised the issue of anonymity, I thought I ought to let you know what goes on behind the scenes in the moderators' corner with respect to anonymity and personal information. Pix.

Thanks for reminding everyone of this. Needless to say my identity is not a secret to anyone, many people have many reasons to keep their identities confidential and everyone should respect that. Cheers R PS - Yes that is me in the picture, much more gray now but that was me in 2010

I too appreciate anonymity on this board. I am no ALJ, but I hope to be someday; I'd hate to see dumb mistakes ruin my chance, and I'd hope to see someone like Pixie rectify my mistakes before they were to notice. TY.

I agree thx to Pixie, Gar, Gaidin, JudgeRatty,Liz, and the rest. As hard as it is for me to believe now, we'll need the board even more after NORs; the anxiety and such will likely be ramped up!

While I have immense gratitude for the safe and protective nature of this board, I also try not to say anything that I wouldn't want to read on the front page of the newspaper :-)

I agree completely. Of course, discretion was of little use to Judge Ratty on the first day of class in Falls Church. The pointy ears, dark eyes and vigorously wagging tail were a dead giveaway. Edit Note by Pixie: This has to be one of the best posts ever. Pixie

One thing to remember is that it may not be something you said here that is the concern. I am not really worried that anyone at Puzzle Palace will figure out who I am. I am however, somewhat concerned that if I am lucky enough to get hired that reps and or claimants who peruse the board will know that the new judge in West Crapland is Gaidin and he has a kid and is married. Others might want to avoid potential problems with new co workers who failed to get on the register or are on the register but haven't gotten the job yet.
To put it bluntly if I get the job I will tell everybody. I just won't tell you where.

If I get a job out of this I would be glad to affirm that, but understand it would depend how long it would take to revive me...

And for the record, we have sent each other PM's but I have in no way asked for any specific information that would identify anyone on this board. I WISH I were selected for a class! But am still in limbo waiting for my NOR. Even if I were, rest assured I would not violate Board etiquette. Edit Note by Pixie: Of course you would not. Pix.

This has to be one of the best posts on the board. Maybe I see it that way because I am a fan of German Shepard Dogs and of JudgeRatty. Pixie.

JudgeRatty's encouraging "it's a good time to be on the register" posts betray the wagging even here.
