I've read about Fayetteville. Trust me, I get the gist. What I am wondering is if any board member with younger kids (middle schoolers) has actually done a stint there or may actually be there now. I am looking (perhaps prematurely or for naught) for info on the 'burb with the best schools or, alternatively, what private school in the area might be the best option. Anyone out there? I just saw this. There s a burb south of town maybe hope mills and jagvet, can u help field this question. For school age kids, picking a school district between fayetteville and raleigh may be best route.

Apex would be wonderful but I just don't think a one hour commute to and from the office is reasonably possible for me on a daily basis. I can't seem to find any good public options in the areas closer to F'ville. There's a private school called Fayetteville Academy which might be my only option but the thought of tuition for middle school and high school is not a happy one. But, I might have to grin and bear it should an offer there come. My girl is doing quite well and I don't want to upset the path she's on academically or otherwise.

He made it sound like the best Fayetteville option.

I don't know how good the Salemburg schools are, but I don't like any of the Fayettteville area schools (Cumberland County), which includes Hope Mills. Hope Mills can be misleading. On the surface, some neighborhoods seem okay, but there is high crime there. Almost anything west of I-95 should be avoided. I can say this as a retired Army Reserve officer: There is a big retiree and active duty population that lives south and west of Fort Bragg, because it is convenient to health care and shopping on post, but there are lots of drugs and gangs. To the northwest, Spring Lake is worse. Lots of rental properties with single soldiers and people who are not even in the Army, but hang out for prostitution, drugs, etc.
If you can commute to Apex, Cary, Garner, Raleigh or Fuquay-Varina, these are good places, and in the Wake County school system, which is excellent. Buies Creek, home of Campbell University has some nice neighborhoods. Half hour south of Fayetteville is St. Pauls, a pleasant town, where the schools are okay. Then there is Steadman, which although in Cumberland County, is about 8 miles east of Fayetteville (away from Ft. Bragg), and a decent community. Send me a PM, carolinagirl, if you want to discuss. I lived in the Carolinas from 1975-2004, and travelled all around there.

Thanks, Gaiden. I will do a little more research on that. Salemburg is home to the NC Criminal Justice Academy, which trains every highway patrolman, sheriff's deputy and policeman in the state. You encounter law enforcement people everywhere. Probably the safest town in the state.

I just lived for 28 years in the Carolinas and loved it. Even though I've been gone 12 years, I still know the places there pretty well. "I'm gone to Carolina in my mind."

Umm, did anyone see the Tax Foundation of America study on the real value of $100 in each state?
It noted that Mississippi was number 1 and $100 there had the equivalent buying power of $115.34. So, although all the odar's in Mississippi fall within the Rest of US locality pay, the salary there is worth an extra 15% in actual value.
Lowest cost of living. Low taxes. 3 wonderfully run odar offices. Beautiful state with amazing history, culture and nature. Each of the odar offices are within less than 30 minutes of at least 2 level 5 school districts. No snow.
Seems like a no brainer to me.

Interestingly, DC is at the bottom. You need to make a LOT of money to live in DC.
