On the all-managers’ call this week, news came out that SSA is looking to hire almost 100 ALJs in early FY ‘19 (which starts on 10/1/18).
Cue everyone holding our breath to see if the process can move forward before being stalled by litigation.

Polish your resumes, make sure your list of accomplishments* is up-to-date, have the dates of your bar admissions handy, and log in to your USAJobs account to ensure your password hasn’t expired.
I have no idea how or when the posting will appear, or what the process will entail. But for heaven’s sake, be ready to throw your hat in the ring when the bell sounds!
*I was an NODAR. But it seems when people are applying for promotions they always have to have some sort of list of accomplishments, assignments they’ve taken or special projects they’ve completed. It may or may not be some kind of point system — but whatever it is, it seems to matter to the agency so make sure that’s up-to-date if you’re an insider.

Ready to apply, but also ready to sue if anything smells funny in the process. I'm mostly curious how they will apply veterans preference. If it's just "positive factor," I'm almost surely suing. Sorry, everyone. Word on the street is that SSA submitted their new hiring mechanism to DOJ a few weeks ago—I’d be willing to bet the Vet hiring is at the top of why DOJ has to approve it.

I'm hopeful that this DOJ in particular will require something concrete in the way of vet preference, but who knows. "Positive factor" means nothing. What would military service be in the absence of the VPA, a negative factor?! based on the arguments in Lucia and the language in the EO, I think this Admin believes it has complete control over Art I hiring—including the ability to do as it pleases with Vet “preference”

Sorry, everyone. Good luck, you have to have smoking gun on violation of vets preference. All hiring manager needs to say is it was a consideration in desition and viewed positively.

dshawn I miss your shark photo! It always made me smile. While I don't care for the blank avatars, I think the blank is better than what dshawn had before. It was just creepy. It always made me cringe. Pixie
