I think the background checks have begun. I have credit alerts and I received an e-mail today that an investigative service has pulled my credit report.

Yes, from what I hear from others, I believe they are actively working our files at this point. This is consistent with someone else previously posting that our interview calls will take place next week.

Mine was on TransUnion - Omniplex World Services Thanks! I think yours is the right one since OMNI was mentioned before in the e-mail. <addendum> I just checked Transunion by using my free credit report for this year, and sure enough, OMNI already got my credit report from them.

For those of us who are hanging on every tidbit of news -- last evening my HOCALJ told me he had received a phone call telling him to expect a call next week to discuss me.

Getting nervous even though advised not to....
I just checked with 3 of my references and none of them have been called or emailed.......anyone else in that boat?
Also, of course I have not been called for the interview yet either.
Thanks to all and good luck to all.

"Chill."
Ok, I'll try to take that advice. Maybe a belated Polar Bear dip in the water at Coney Island would chill me.
Thanks for the help. Don't you just love the Internet?

I have been listed as a reference for at least one individual. I received the following e-mail on Friday which is sufficiently benign to share it with you (personal info redacted):
My name is ________________, with____________, a consumer investigative agency which has been retained by the Social Security Administration to conduct pre-employment screening verifications on all applicants for the position of Administrative Law Judge. As part of the investigation, we are required to contact six references provided to us by each candidate.
___________ has provided you as a reference, and, as such, we would like to speak with you in reference to their application. Our interview process involves approximately eleven to twelve open ended questions regarding a variety of job-related topics involving your experience with the candidate. We estimate the interview at approximately twelve to sixteen minutes.
If you prefer, I can forward a copy of the reference document which you can complete at your leisure, and return to us ideally within four to six business days. If this is your preferred means of contact, please advise, and I will forward a copy of the document to you along with some basic instructions.
If you would prefer to be contacted telephonically please advise and a[n] investigator will call you within the next two weeks.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation. If there is any other information you require about the process before you decide which way you prefer to be contacted, please do not hesitate to let me know.
Thank you for your time.

Alj2009, I'm in the same boat as you. No one has contacted my references and I'm still waiting for a call to schedule an interview. I'm not freaking out . . . yet. Hang in there.

Hi. None of my references have reported to me that they have been called. I am checking to see if my credit has been checked. No call for interview either, but I turned in my paperwork on March 25. I am admittedly feeling the stress. My score was fairly good.

I'm in the same boat too. Good score, no call yet and no information that my references have been contacted. Very frustrating. I'm trying to be patient, but it's hard!

Ditto here. My credit report was pulled, but no references checked so far as I can tell, and no call. I sent my paperwork back in March 18, and had a good score. As longas there are more than one of us in the same boat, I will not call MAYDAY yet.

So what if your credit sucks? What difference does that make to SSA?

So what if your credit sucks? What difference does that make to SSA? They want to test your financial responsibility.

1. I know of at least one person on last year's list who received an ALJ appointment despite having perfectly dreadful credit. 2. I received my call to schedule an interview early Saturday morning yet my references haven't been called yet, and I am a reference for a number of people on the cert, yet I have not been contacted for that, either. It just takes time. Relax. Things are humming along and they will get to us all in time.

I didn't mean to sound flip. My credit isn't THAT bad. I just don't know of a lot of people who don't some problem, and I can't see what difference it would make to SSA short of fraudulent activity. Does anyone know what factor this plays in the process? I saw the earlier post on someone with horrible credit getting hired.

One of the 'adversary' references was asked about my practice, reputation, etc., so I guess that would sort of qualify. Since all my "supervisor" senior partners in my old firm are dead, I gave them the name and phone number of another former partner as 'someone who would know about my performance.

All, I doubt that a bad credit rating alone will bounce you. I personally know a 2008 selectee who had gone through foreclosure, and had other credit problems, who has been an ALJ with ODAR since last summer.
Good luck to all
