Over on the "Interviews" thread EagleJag brought up the idea of the effect of pulling a significant number of experienced staff attorneys out of the hearing office to fill ALJ slots. In addition to these personnel moves, some of us are starting to see offices that are hiring up to 50% increases in staff, or more, including ALJs, attorneys, and clerks. I'm just curious if other people are seeing this much of an increase in staff. Some offices could see a dramatic impact upon their functioning and personality.

Yes, in our region the hearing offices are maxing out capacity for all staff positions. We are filling every available pod or office with a body. What it means in the great scheme of things I would not want to guess. What it means to us is lots of newbies who can barely find their you-know-what with both hands for a certain amount of time, yet they must be assigned work involving the cases of real people. It makes for some interesting times with so many new people in the mix at one time. I don't know how so many people at once can be effectively trained and mentored in their office since they will not go for official training for many months. For outside folks reading this, unlike new ALJs, everyone else goes to training at ODAR whenever it gets scheduled, even a year or so after they are in the position. It reminds me of tossing a kid in the water in order for them to learn to swim. Sometimes it works fine and other times it is a baaaaad idea.

Nonamouse,
Does you mean that if people get hired in September, they will not go to training till next summer? I was wondering how that would work.
Thanks

The current hiring binge is based upon available space in individual hearing offices. Hearing offices with vacant private offices are getting attorneys (we are getting several); offices with vacant cubicles get clerical staff. Workload in an individual office is not a consideration. Everyone gets formal training but the initial training will be OJT.

Nonamouse, Does you mean that if people get hired in September, they will not go to training till next summer? I was wondering how that would work. Thanks If by "people," you mean judges, no; they will get training shortly after being selected. If by "people," you mean clerical staff, attorneys and paralegals, yes; they will get ojt and then formal training when it can be fitted in. Please check your PMs. Pix.
