I have heard that the SSA "powers that be" sent a letter to ALL components emphasizing a "dire need for more quality veterans" in candidate pools.
It is unclear if this applies to ALJ hiring. However, it would seem that pass-over approval will be more difficult in every component.

They have announced essentially the same thing about handicapped candidates. This is likely a standard fluff method of "promoting hiring of (name your priority) candidates." When SSA is asked what they have done to hire veterans lately, they will refer back to "April 20, 2009 Deputy Commissioner Announcement: Importance of Hiring Veterans."
This comment is not in any way a belittling of veterans or handicapped, or handicapped veterans. I know HR people who say that this is just SOP. I hope they do hire more veterans. Some of my friends "over there" have said they are seeing guys re-enlist because their other option is standing in line for the "opportunity" of applying for an Applebee's wait-staff position. There's something wrong with that.
