Hi everyone,
I would like to do an active member census later this week so we haven an idea as to the background/interests of current members. Since we can't modify poll questions once posted, I figured I'll post the draft here for comments and turn it into another anonymous poll once we iron out the details:
What is your current status (please pick the one most applicable):
1. ODAR ALJ (line) 2. ODAR ALJ (management) 3. ALJ with another federal agency (line) 4. ALJ with another federal agency (management) 5. ALJ candidate on the registry/cert 6. ALJ candidate waiting for the next OPM testing 7. ODAR Management (not an ALJ candidate) 8. Other federal agency management (not an ALJ candidate) 9. Relative/Friend/Associate of an ALJ candidate 10. Attorneys who might want to apply for ALJ someday but haven't taken the test yet. 11. Non-attorney line staff with ODAR 12. Non-attorney line staff with another federal agency using ALJs 13. Interested public
***
Let me know if there's any additional categories we should add. Thanks!

You may want to break no. 10 into several categories. Attorneys at ODAR/SSA. Attorneys at other federal agencies. Attorneys at other governmental units. Attorneys in private practice.
I know at some point it could become too ungainly. It may be too specialized for your purpose.
Good idea for a poll.

There are also some current state and local ALJs on the board.

You might want to break interested public into Social Security representative and social security claimant. I also think you should think big and have a choice for the President of the United States and the COSS. The Pres should always get his own line, and, although the COSS would be considered under management - as the COSS, he should get his own line, too.

There are also Federal Administrative Judges from other agencies who are not ALJs but hear cases in a quasi-judicial forum.

The poll is asking 2 things: (1) what are you doing now; (2) whether or not you're in the process & if so what stage. So you could have a group of questions asking the former, and a second group of questions asking the latter. Like my "demographics for scores 75 and above" poll had different groups of Qs. If you go that route, I think the categories you should add for Part 1 are State ALJ and clarify that someone could be an ALJ or AJ (Administrative Judge) for a federal agency. Someone corrected me in my poll that I should have had the AJ category. Then part 2 could ask: 1. Are you on the cert for the first time? 2. Are you on the cert for the second time? 3. Are you on the register, but did not make the SSA cert? 4. Did you apply before but score was too low or disqualified? 5. Have you never applied but are you considering applying in the future? 6. Are you a relative/friend/associate of an ALJ candidate? 7. ODAR insider non-applicant just interested in the board? 8. Interested public?

Excellent points so far. I think NW is right about trying to do too much with one poll. So I'll probably break it up into Part 1 and Part 2 (not a big fan of one poll with two different sets of questions). Please let me know if there are any other thoughts on this matter. I'll set up the polls by tomorrow night.
Hopefully this will give all of us a better sense of where we stand as a virtual community. ;D

How about a different Board altogether for polls ? WWW, General, and Polls.

BTW I guess I fit under the framework of #5

How about a different Board altogether for polls ? WWW, General, and Polls. It does seem like we have quite a few polls these days. Might not be a bad idea to try it out for a while.

I'm not so sure folks will go to both the polls page and the General page - I like having them on the same one, since there are usually comments posted in the poll thread. I only go to WWW occasionally.

Might be worthwhile to include active duty military as a category in the poll.

I only go to WWW occasionally. I think having the polls all on one board does help them all be in one place and that kind of board would not be like going to the Wild, Wild West..... Having them off the general board will give more room for the threads, IMHO. And we'd get used to taking a look at a Poll Board if we were interested.

I like to sign on and just see what's new in the threads. Having the entire 1st page devoted to polls would slow down the process so I like the idea of having the polls separated.

I think having the polls all on one board does help them all be in one place and that kind of board would not be like going to the Wild, Wild West The more I think about it the more I like the poll sub-forum idea. It keeps the polls in one place and allows polls to be stickied longer (right now I have to take the polls down regularly because they clutter the space). It also makes it easier for folks to search for older polls if that's what they're looking for. It's easy to move posts between sub forums. So we can try it out for a month, and if it's a flop, we can always go back to status quo. I'll set it up tonight so we can see how it goes.

I don't see a category for attorney ODAR employees who are not trying to be ALJs. I don't know that we have any, it just seems like it's missing.
