Hi everyone,
This board was created to promote the civilized exchange of information related to ALJ hiring after the trolls infested the old board (aka TOB) back in 2007. Pix and I started this board with the goal to keep it relatively civil and clean of trolls.
The goal here is to promote the free exchange of ideas while avoiding gross personal attacks or pointless flames. While we keep the general forum open for everyone to read, membership is required to post in the general forum and access the polling forum. Signing up means you agree to try and be civil and will listen to the moderators if we ask you to tone things down a little. Disruptive behaviors will result in suspension/ban after the first warning. If you can't behave with some amount of professionalism and courtesy, we don't want to play with you.
Hope we all have a good time and stay civil and respectful to each other.
Now for some basic features of this board:
First, chooise your username wisely!!!
When you register, the initial username you put down is permanently associated with your account and you will always need to use it to log in. Even if you change your display name, your original username is in your profile and is on public display (there is no way to hide it).
So please DO NOT choose a name that you don't want the rest of the world to see. There will be no way to remove it other than deleting the entire account and all posts associated with it.
There are two main methods of member reputation on this forum:
Member Ranking
Member ranking is earned through posting on the forum. As you contribute more posts, your forum rank will increase. Your ranking starts out at one star and max out at six stars.
Warning Bar
In rare situations, member ranking may (the star(s) & member title) be replaced by an orange warning bar. This is usually when a member has been suspended for violating forum rules. This warning bar is only visible to the suspended member, not other users. Please contact the administrator if your account has been suspended and you see a warning bar.
Now a quick warning about behaviors that we don't tolerate here:
From Wiki:
***
An Internet troll, or simply troll in Internet slang, is someone who intentionally posts controversial or contrary messages in an on-line community such as an on-line discussion forum or group with the singular intention of baiting users into an argumentative response.
Baiting, is another behavior that we don't tolerate here. A Baiter is someone in an Internet discussion group who deliberately posts aggravating messages on a message board. Often, this is part of a previous conflict between the baiter and the baiter's intended target.
Baiters are different from Trolls (see above) and Flamers (see below) because they do not directly insult their target; instead, they post something likely to aggravate him/her.
Flaming is the hostile and insulting interaction between Internet users. Flaming usually occurs in the social context of a discussion board, Internet Relay Chat (IRC) or even through e-mail. An Internet user typically generates a flame response to other posts or users posting on a site, and is usually not constructive, does not clarify a discussion, and does not persuade others. Sometimes, flamers attempt to assert their authority, or establish a position of superiority over other users. Other times, a flamer is simply an individual who believes he or she carries the only valid opinion. This leads him or her to personally attack those who disagree. Occasionally, flamers wish to upset and offend other members of the forum, in which case they can be called "trolls". Most often however, flames are angry or insulting messages transmitted by people who have strong feelings about a subject.

If you want to see internet trolling and flaming in all it's glory, feel free to check the older (2007 - 2008) messages at the old ALJ Improvement Board (aka TOB).
Most of us old timers (membership from 2007) here are "refugees" from that board after the 2007 troll infestation on the TOB got out of hand. So we try our best to keep this place pleasant and civilized so people can exchange information without getting insulted or put down. Thanks!
Finally, a word to new members. Please read the stickied threads on Search Function Feature and ALJ Hiring FAQs before asking questions. Most of us here prefer folks to exercise some due diligence (after all, you're at least an attorney if you want to be an ALJ...) before asking. So please review the above resources before asking, otherwise one of us might just tell you to go back and do some more research first, since many of the common questions newbies have were already answered multiple times in the last two years. Thanks.
Sincerely,
ALJD
