The HOD in my office is retiring and a vacancy announcement is forthwith. I'm interested in making my office a better place to work for the employees we currently have, they are very good people and hard workers. Does anyone think there will be any advantage or disadvantage to me becoming HOD as far as getting an ALJ position? Does anyone know of any HODs that have become ALJs?

No known advantage, and yes HODs have gone on to become ALJs.

Two advantages: 1. The position is management and will give you a some extra points in the OPM exam. 2. If you get to SSA on a certificate, you will be number one with a bullet, assuming you have done a good job with the office and are in good standing with region. Pix.

A judge in my class (2001) was a HOD. He took the job after being supervisory attorney. He became a HOD after that position was established. Was a HOCALJ later.

I have no SSA experience so I don't know what a HOD does. Are HODs usually attorneys?

A Hearing Office Director. The one who is charged with the day to day running of the office, and so much more. No, not usually an attorney, but it does help. Pix.

HOD positions are usually advertised both as attorney and as non-attorney positions, i.e., two announcements come out, one for attorneys and one for non-attorneys, and one person is chosen.
