How many of us are in the mix?

One of the most important questions to me is how many of us are on the certificate/register or whatever the heck it's called from which SSA is hiring. It seems like someone recently used the term "over 400," although I can't seem to find that post now. The numbers 600 and 650 have been stated as well, I think.

Wouldn't the actual # be public record at this point? Has anyone on the inside at SSA actually seen the certificate or whatever, or at least seen a concrete number?

If this has already been resolved here, I apologize. Thanks to everyone for a lot of great information on this site.

Shadow: I work for a federal agency. Back in June I saw a copy of the Federal Times (or some similarly titled magazine for federal employees) and it stated that when the application period closed at midnight back in May, OPM had received 1270 applications. Several people have stated when they spoke informally to OPM personnel during interviews that the number invited was approximately 600. Finally, when SSA put out the bid for a private contractor to do background checks for ALJ's, it said the number would be for "at least 400". Given the rule of 3, and the info above, I think it is safe to assume there are between 400-450 people alive at this point.

Here are the most reputable numbers I have seen for various topics:

The number of initial alj applicants - 1250
The number making the register - 600
The number that appealed not makng the register - unknown
The number that appealed their score on the register - unknown
Highest score reported - 90.73
Lowest score reported - 47.75
Number of ODAR attorneys on the register - 50
The number of names on the certificate - 450
Number of positions to be filed from this cert - 150
Lowest score reported reached by this cert - 55.78
