The FEAI said the "type of appointment" is "career/career conditional". I know what that means (or used to mean) for other SSA permanent jobs -- the person is hired in "career conditional" status and after three years of adequate job performance, becomes "career" status, with Merit System protection somewhat similar to having tenure.
But what does this mean for ALJs? Are newly hired ALJs in "career conditional" status for a certain amount of time?

But, could career/career conditional mean that the appointment is subject to the successful completion of the background check? Surely, OPM cannot complete the background check on 150 ALJs before March 2008. . .
