Yes, it was for the refresher training, not the new class.

ALJ supplemental training is one week in early May and second class one week early June. The training calendar was slotted for new ALJ training in July, but as with anything, no guarantee.

I'm curious, let's assume there are in fact approximately 25 spots that need to be filled. Assuming all 25 are staffed using transfers, doesn't that immediately create 25 openings in other offices? But, to fill those positions, wouldn't they have to go to OPM for another cert? Why don't they just handle all transfers first, and then request a cert for spots that are empty and no one is lloking to be transferred to.

Most cities on any cert have no open ALJ space but it is anticipated that transfers may create an opening that will need to be filled by the cert

I'm hearing from different places that there are 200-300 people on this cert. How is that possible if SSA only plans on hiring 25 or so? I thought that the certificate had three times the number of anticipated hires.

References are continuing to be called for this cert.

I thought that the certificate had three times the number of anticipated hires. I was told that they're planning on making a much larger hire than 25 off this cert by my supervisor. I believe he indicated a 100+ number. Another one joked that meant they'd be taking scores of 25 because of it.

That would explain the 300 names on the cert...

I don't see how there could be 300 on this cert given the number of people who replied to the poll for March 2013 cert scores (about 38 people). If history is correct, this board gets about 1/3 participation. That would put the number of names in the 110 - 115 range.

I asked my HOCALJ buddy the other day and he said if any hiring is going to be made its likely to be fairly minimal because the Agency just wants cover urgent needs while waiting for the new register to be ready. The number I heard banter about was closer to 25 than 100+.

mcb of 4/5; prescient of 4/6; and nylawyer of 4/15: don't be put off by my outdated login name. I am now a fed. In my few years w the agency, transfers have only been offered in anticipation of a new hire. They may well have the discretion to fill a vacancy from death, retirement or resignation at any old time, but as a practical matter they do NOT. So, transfers come but once a year. Also, I have been informed by HQ that all transfers are done when a cert is requested from OPM. Therefore, transfers were complete on March 1. So no need to worry about a transfer snatching an opening.

My reference check started yesterday.
I see a small hire of 25-30. I am not on the inside but it just makes sense based on budget constraints that ODAR can fill existing vacant positions only. A hire of 100+ would mean an expansion of the ALJ corps and I just don't see how that agency would have that amount of $. .

Is there any significance that my references were checked, or do they check everyone on the cert? If I understand the process correctly, I don't think there is any chance that I'm in the top 3 at any of my locations (I have a very low score, below 50, and a limited GAL), so I'm assuming I'm not really under consideration, or does the fact I'm on the cert mean I must be in the top 3 somewhere?

The fact that you are on the cert does not necessarily mean that you are in the top three at this point for any location, there's always some extras on the cert, and when it comes down to making choices it depends on which locations get selected for first and who gets "struck" as they go, which can allow a lower scoring person to move up.
Everyone on the cert gets their references called, not always all of the references for every person, but the idea is to to some checking on everybody.

The location poll in the polling palace suggests there are many extras. Just with people that have voted, there seems to be between 15-25 with each city on their cert (who knows how many in addition). I don't know if this is normal, but if so, I wish I had understood this with previous certs. It would have dramatically lowered my expectation level and made life planning easier.

News from Bob re current Hiring Certificate & personal update re new ALJ application. There are 386 people on the ALJ cert. He expects ALJ offers to be made at the end of May. Additionally, he does not believe that Schedule A applies to this competitive classified job. I would love to hear from others who believe that Schedule A criteria is applicable as I look upon my permanent disability parking pass that just arrived. Also, re timing of the ALJ on-line step, 2 wks ago I received a request for elaboration on my reasonable accommodation for the entire selection process eg ergonomic chair in DC, and to date I have not received my on-line admission to the new testing or word on accommodation. Good luck to everybody. CarpeDiem, is this in reference to the March 2013 cert? If you have 300 plus people on the cert, I suspect that the hiring will be for much more than 25-30 positions. Is that correct?

Yes, this is for the March 2013 cert that I am on with the hundreds of others and I didn't ask Bob how many will be hired from the cert but I believe that it won't be more than 25 folks. I assume that the large number pertains to Vets who can join the party whenever they want to be considered, rather than from testing in 2008.
