First post folks - go easy on me. I'm awaiting the NOR like many others, but I have a unique circumstance I haven't seen discussed previously.
I am eligible for a VERA/VSIP at my current agency. If I take it, and then am fortunate enough to receive an ALJ offer, I am pretty sure I'd have to pay back the VSIP, but my question relates to the VERA. As I understand it, I would continue to receive my retirement annuity, but my ALJ salary would be reduced by that same amount. That is, unless the agency, presumably SSA, applies for a waiver. But I can't find anything on the criteria for the waiver.
So, assuming somebody on this board has been in this situation, does SSA ODAR seek a waiver for its ALJs? If not, do I become any more "desireable" as a possible hire (assuming everything else is equal) in that the agency might be able to spend less of its own money in paying my salary?
If I've learned anything about this board, it's that there is not a situation out there that hasn't already occurred or somebody knows something about.

Well, I guess I was wrong. There isn't someone who has experienced, or knows about, every scenario. There's not a reemployed annuitant on this board?

You would definitely have to pay back the VSIP if you accepted another federal job within 5 years of accepting the VSI. As a reemployed annuitant you will, most likely, be subject to offset of any annuity you are receiving. You need to go talk with you HR peeps and find out what the real story is, sometimes it's agency dependent. For example, DoD has the statutory authority to hire reemployed annuitants without off-set. Don't think that applies to many other agencies.

The fact that the agency would spend less money, makes no difference. It does not make you "more desirable" to the agency.

Well...all other things being equal, I'm not sure that some agency managers would not take that into consideration. Whether they should or not is a different question, but I could hear that conversation occurring in my current agency.

I talked to a re-hired annuitant SSA ALJ that was working in Cleveland and he told me that he was getting his full retirement pay and working half time so he was also getting half time pay, but no health insurance as he had that under his retirement program. There was no offset or payback for him.
