I didn't notice either. The SEC's announcement has a bit more information on him: www.sec.gov/News/PressRelease/Detail/PressRelease/1370543014965#.VMfSunktGvEI've seen nothing to indicate that he has worked as an ALJ before. So apparently he was selected off the register. Probably scored very high, and he would seem to have vet points based on the announcement. Very impressive guy; congrats to him.

Military Attache in Baghdad Lead Interrogator in Iraq WTC Litigator Bronze Star
I am surprised he is not running for 2016 President.

"Lead Interrogator in Iraq?" He wouldn't be any fun if he found your credibility suspect.

It is my understanding from a well-placed source that the SEC does not hire its ALJs from the register, but rather that they recruit directly on usajobs.gov.

It is my understanding from a well-placed source that the SEC does not hire its ALJs from the register, but rather that they recruit directly on usajobs.gov. Both of their most recent hires were off the register. When they were looking to hire Judge Patil they even contacted another Board member agilitymom to see if she was interested. She had already accepted an ODAR job that was a better fit for her. I believe in the past they hired from other agencies but I have also heard that in the past they only hired insiders. Its a little unclear what kind of work Judge Grimes did for DoJ before getting hired but is abundantly clear that Judge Patil had little or no SEC experience before getting hired.

They can't hire ALJs off the street. They can hire AJs, but not ALJs. One must either be an "already appointed" ALJ for another agency OR the agency has to request a list of eligibles (and that's us) from OPM to hire an ALJ.

SEC liked this Register--and they aren't the only ones. The bar gets upped and you get higher jumpers.

He was appointed in September '14. So it looks like SEC did pick him up from the Register.
