The pessimist sees the dark tunnel; The optimist sees the light at the end of the tunnel; The realist sees the freight train; The train conductor sees three idiots standing on the tracks.
Having run the gauntlet, my best advice for future applicants and new board members is to be your own conductor. Some of the information you will see on this board is very good, and some is kind of kooky, including my own. Try not to let anything get you too down and don't start doubting yourself. The best thing you can do right now to prepare for the future is to perform your current job really well. Chart your own course. Good luck.

And remember the railroad employee who couldn't be put to death in the electric chair because he was a poor conductor.
In other words, throughout the process, keep your sense of humor, even when no one else finds your jokes funny.

Excellent advice. I will probably apply if there is a refresh in 2016 or 2017. That said, I am currently researching the Route 8 Serial Murders that occurred not far from my house in Connecticut between 1988-2006. The perpetrator has never been found, but there has been some development in this cold case on behalf of the Waterbury PD in recent months. As luck would have it, I connected with a retired PI who was active in the investigation of 3 of the 5 murders. He is eager to share information with me in an interview this Friday. (Current PD refuse to share inside details as they are bound by confidentiality since the case is still open.) This book could potentially do well for sales, and turn my ALJ dream into a long lost memory. In the meantime, I continue to practice law from 9-5. Who knows what the future will bring? I'll let y'all know if and when the book is published.
