Thanks propmaster(and others) for taking the time to sort through all of the data and information. I find these polls very useful. I participated in the polls to at least add my two cents into the mix

With each additional waiting day, I keep thinking of ways to pass the time.
Anybody out there interested in a poll that just asks candidates to list their first choice of all the cities?
On the other hand, maybe ya'll are getting tired of meaningless polls?

I, for one, am never tired of your polls, semipa! I'll go first - my first choice is Johnstown, PA, simply because it will require the least disruption to my personal life...

Secondchance, the only reason you want Johnstown is so you can go out to the mall at lunchtime and dine at the best Chinese buffet between Pittsburgh and Philadelphia.

Either St. Louis [actually Creve Couer, a suburb] because I'm from St. Louis; or close second choice of Minneapolis because my wife is from Minnesota and I have a lot of wild and crazy in-laws up there [and I always wanted to learn how to ice fish]. ;D

In Minnesota you can spend many lazy summer days ice fishing.

Well, I didn't score over 80 (I wish : , but my first choice is Newark NJ - same reason as secondchance - least disruption of my current life.

I guess my other thought with this poll idea is - well, I wish it would matter what my preference is - but it doesn't - so why even think about it.
If I thought that SSA was going to call up "Highest Ranking Certificate Member" and say "hey, we want to hire you, which of your 71 listed cities do you want?" and then work their way down the list that way, my preferences might matter.
OTOH, I get the impression that instead they will call "HRCM" and say "Hey, we want to hire you for Least Desirable City. Do you want the job?" And even though HRCM is the highest ranking person on the list and even though Least Desirable City is number 71 on her list of 71 cities, if HRCM doesn't take the job - that's it. SSA is not going to go down the list and find a city she likes better. This is the scenario, right?
Which says to me, no matter what our ranking of cities, if we want the job, we'll take the offer.

We did not rank cities; as far as SSA is concerned, each city we marked is our #1 choice.

Really, I just want to be #1 for one of the cities I listed!

I still don't understand why SSA won't allow us to rank our preferences. Even the Army gave us a "dream sheet" when we first went on active duty. Yeah, but they didn't CARE what you put on it!!!!

Yeah, but they didn't CARE what you put on it!!!! I hear that. My neighbors are from Hawaii and, despite picking several warm weather states, ended up in Michigan. . . . and they thought I was joking when I told them that they had to rake the snow off their roof to prevent ice dams.

I have updated Semipa's list as of 3:15pm Central time today. I find it fascinating to watch the numbers move, even slightly, and even if they don't make any difference to the outcome of my/our applications.
So far, the voters in each poll are: Poll 1: 63 Poll 2: 74 Poll 3: 56 Poll 4: 31 and 16/54 people have indicated selecting all locations.
I have inserted a (-) or (+) for locations that have somewhat moved in relation to their neighbors (notable ones only).
So here are the latest rankings from least selected to most selected.
Evansville, IN - 20 Flint, MI - 22 Fresno, CA - 22 Johnstown, PA - 22 New Orleans, LA - 22 Oak Park, MI - 22 Tupelo, MS - 22 West Des Moines, IA - 22 Downey, CA - 23 Fargo, ND - 23 Grand Rapids, MI - 23 Los Angeles West, CA - 23 Milwaukee, WI - 23 Orland Park, IL - 23 Queens, NY - 23 San Jose, CA - 23 (-) Shreveport, LA - 23 Alexandria, LA - 24 Creve Coeur, MO - 24 Metairie, LA - 24 Peoria, IL - 24 Hattiesburg, MS - 25 (+) Minneapolis, MN - 25 Montgomery, AL - 25 Newark, NJ - 25 (-) Billings, MT - 26 Dayton, OH - 26 Indianapolis, IN - 26 Morgantown, WV - 26 Paducah, KY - 26 Sacramento, CA - 26 (-) Syracuse, NY - 26 Wilkes Barre, PA - 26 Cleveland, OH - 27 Fort Smith, AR - 27 Harrisburg, PA - 27 Jackson, MS - 27 New York, NY - 27 Pittsburgh, PA - 27 Salt Lake City, UT - 27 Spokane, WA - 27 Tulsa, OK - 27 Houston, TX - 28 Springfield, MO - 28 Albany, NY - 29 (+) Charleston, WV - 29 Columbus, OH - 29 Dover, DE - 29 Columbia, SC - 30 Fort Lauderdale, FL - 30 (-) Huntington, WV - 30 Wichita, KS - 30 Birmingham, AL - 31 Little Rock, AR - 31 Macon, GA - 31 Mobile, AL - 31 Orlando, FL - 31 (-) Cincinnati, OH - 32 Greenville, SC - 32 Fort Worth, TX - 33 Louisville, KY - 33 Atlanta, GA - 33 Atlanta North, GA - 33 Seattle, WA - 33 Tampa, FL - 34 (-) Charleston, SC - 35 Chattanooga, TN - 35 Knoxville, TN - 35 Nashville, TN - 35 Charlotte, NC - 39 Raleigh, NC - 39

It is Pittsburg H. (No, I don't live there, but if SSA wants to send me there, I will go)

There is a West Pittsburg (no H), PA, but I looked on the ODAR office locator list and the office is definitely in Pittsburgh. (I just cut and pasted the list from the FEAI which accounts for the lack of an 'H' on the poll)

A bit of history: In 1890, President Benjamin Harrison established the U.S. Board on Geographic Names. One of their first decrees was that cities and towns ending in "burgh" would drop the final "h" and be spelled "burg". The citizens of Pittsburgh, PA vociferously objected to this requirement, and in 1911, the Board finally restored the "h" in Pittsburgh. It is the only U.S. city or town spelled this way. There are other towns named Pittsburg, which are spelled without the "h". For this reason, Pittsburgh, PA is said to be the most misspelled city in the U.S. Just thought inquiring minds might want to know.

It's more than the "h". It's a can-do attitude. It is smash-mouth football. It's a Shot and an Iron. It's pierogies served piping hot. It is where I would like to be, too. but cannot.
