Owl, thank you. Can't keep up with all of the changes. That should make it a little better to work there.

Thanks to all for making this available. I'm not sure how up-to-date it is though. One of the ALJs from my office on the list received the transfer last October.

Same the last time dw2balj. On one hand, I understand why those anxiously waiting want to look at the transfer list to assess their chances. On the other hand, I really don't think people should be making any life decisions based on the transfer list. It's not entirely accurate and subject to misinterpretation, such as making the logical (but incorrect) assumption that because no one is on the transfer list to an NHC it must be an awful place to work.

Thanks to all for making this available. I'm not sure how up-to-date it is though. One of the ALJs from my office on the list received the transfer last October. This is the official list for March. I don't know about a judge from October but the judges that transferred into San Antonio were already off it. Whether or not the list is valuable is subject to debate. Right now its information and we are in an information vacuum so it has seemingly added weight.

Gaidin, is "information vacuum" another way of saying the situation sucks?

Exactly Gaidin. That's why I was offering up the limited information I have. Thanks.

It's the best info we have, even if it has a few errors. Thanks, gaidin.

A lot of us in NHCs put in transfer requests just before the most recent ALJ contact was ratified. Until the new contract, we were given preferences in transfers (essentially, put at the top of the lists); when the word came down that this would be changing under the new contract, many of us were also told (by highly placed individuals within the ODAR structure) that those NHC ALJs on the transfer lists prior to ratification of the new contract would be "grandfathered in" and would accordingly maintain our high status on the transfer lists even under the new contract.
The goal of many of us (in common with many others on the transfer lists) was not to transfer immediately, but instead to secure a place on the list that could facilitate a preretirement transfer many years down the road, allowing us to have an income (for perhaps several years) while we prepared for retirement in our chosen location(s).
As most of you know, one retains his or her place on the transfer list even if (s)he declines an offered transfer at any given time. As it turned out, when the new contract was ratified, we were not "grandfathered" in, and instead were placed on the transfer lists like all other ALJs, based upon the date of our request to be placed on the lists.
In any event, the large number of requests to transfer out of NHCs does not reflect a relatively greater dissatisfaction among NHC ALJs. To the contrary, and due primarily to the far greater level of attorney and staff support in NHCs, I greatly prefer working in NHCs than in hearing offices, and believe that most other NHC ALJs (almost all of whom have worked previously in hearing offices) share my sentiment.

Thank you ssaer for your helpful response. I had made no assumptions about why there appeared (to me anyway) to be a large number of NHC ALJs wanting to transfer out as compared to numbers of ALJs wanting to transfer out of other offices.
I really did not even know if it was a large number or percentage because I did not know how many ALJs were at each NHC.
But, your response gave me an understanding.
I also now understand from an earlier post, that ODAR does not hire ALJs off the register directly into NHCs. So, no matter how many transfer out, I will not be hired to replace one, and therefore NHC transfers do not appear to increase potential openings for me to be placed.

NHC transfers do increase potential offerings in hearing offices in one way. When an ALJ transfers out of an NHC, this creates an NHC opening that will be filled by an ALJ who is now in a hearing office. That, in turn, creates a hearing office vacancy that can be filled by a new hire or a transfer (and if it is filled by a transfering ALJ, that in turn would create a vacancy in the office of the transferor).

The transfer list appears to be "being worked," for what that matters, if anything. An ALJ I know is transfering.
