I am not a government employee. At my office, the pay checks arrive the last day of the pay period for which we are getting paid. I get paid twice a month.
It occurs to me that I might have to make plans on having the ability to pay bills for some period of time if government checks come some time after a pay period.
Can anyone fill me in on 1) the frequency of pay periods from the Federal Government, and 2) the delay between the end of the pay period and the check coming?
Thanks in advance.

Feds pay every other Friday - for a preceding two week period when ended a week before you get your paycheck. For example, the last check we received was received on February 8th and was for the two-week pay period ending on February 2nd. Here's an example of an old calendar for 2007 - most agencies put these suckers out for their employees. www.cpms.osd.mil/ASSETS/575F195B2B504D4CA02129429B044C5C/2007Calendar.pdfWith all due respect, fed pay days vary by agency. My agency pay periods begin on Sundays and paydays are every other Monday. I believe there is a lag of 1 pay period before the first check. At least in my agency, we like to start new employees (and promote old employees) on the first day of a pay period.

In SSA they start you on the first day of the pay period then pay you as the lovely jagghagg has described. Therefore, you will get your first paycheck not quite three weeks after you set foot on SSA turf. Thereafter you will take SSA's bread and salt every two weeks.

Just one minor correction. Technically, your SSA payday is Tuesday. However, they release the direct deposit to your bank account on the preceding Friday. Do not ask me to explain. It is one of those I love lucy things. It is only a technicality, but on at least one occasion, the Friday before payroll Tuesday became an issue when the Friday occurred at the end of December and the Tuesday was in the following tax year. In that instance they delayed our payroll until the following Tuesday.
