i bet indiana drivers are quicker than some down south.... and good, i am glad i got tied up and could not get past iowa or even do much other than mention it. when you can get to it, it is all yours Gaidan. and welcome back!!! Having driven through every southern state at some point or another I can tell you that isn't true. I was in Florida, Georgia, and Tennessee on this trip and in each of them traffic flowed at or above the speed limit the vast majority of the time. In Indiana not so much. Yikes!!!

Well, where I spent my vacation last week, they drive even slower (Island time!) and they drive on the left side. Had no where to go anyway so it was alright by me we went slow. No fried brains on any menu, lots of fish, spiny lobster and fried conch, yum!

Everything I know about Kansas I learned from the Wizard of Oz. I am partial to The Wiz in my Wizard of Oz interpretations. Mostly, because of this song.
However, in recent years I have become entranced with Idina Menzel's Elpheba.
But my choice in show tunes isn't you folks came here. Topeka, KS
Topeka (/tɵˈpiːkə/; Kansa: Tó Pee Kuh) is the capital city of the State of Kansas and the seat of Shawnee County.[2] It is situated along the Kansas River in the central part of Shawnee County, located in northeast Kansas, in the Central United States. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 127,473.[9] The Topeka Metropolitan Statistical Area, which includes Shawnee, Jackson, Jefferson, Osage, and Wabaunsee counties, had a population of 233,870 in the 2010 census.
The name Topeka is a Kansa-Osage sentence that means "Place where we dug potatoes"[10] or "a good place to dig potatoes".[11] As a placename, Topeka was first recorded in 1826 as the Kansa name for what is now called the Kansas River. Topeka's founders chose the name in 1855 because it "was novel, of Indian origin and euphonious of sound."[12][13] The mixed-blood Kansa Native American, Joseph James, called Jojim, is credited with suggesting the name of Topeka.[14] The city, laid out in 1854, was one of the Free-State towns founded by Eastern antislavery men immediately after the passage of the Kansas–Nebraska Bill. In 1857, Topeka was chartered as a city.
The city is well known for the landmark U.S. Supreme Court case Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, which overturned Plessy vs. Ferguson and declared racial segregation in public schools to be unconstitutional.[15] Three ships of the U.S. Navy have been named USS Topeka after the city.
Topeka is also the place where the band Kansas was formed.
Staying in Eastern Kansas Melissa Etheridge is from Leavenworth.

I know I am late to the party, but I have to add my "Ick!" to the chorus. And here's a factoid for you: brain is the organ meat with the highest concentration of cholesterol. Guess there are a lot of zombies in Evansville. Cholesterol and zombies; something to consider when adjusting your GAL...

I don't know what to say about the potato digging place (that one had me ROTFL), except that everyone loves potatoes, right?
I have spent time visiting Iowa and there's a lot of charm in parts of the state. Des Moines is a very livable small Midwestern city with affordable homes. The worst two things you can say about it is that 1) it can get VERY COLD. And 2) It's not a quick trip to either coast from there (by that, I mean a direct flight under two hours). But it's about 3-4 hours driving distance to Omaha, KC, and the Twin Cities. And Iowa City, a lovely university town, is about two hours away.
Kansas has it's similar charms too.... Some nice areas. Topeka is a little over an hour from Kansas City.

Wichita, KS
Wichita /ˈwɪtʃɨtɔː/ wich-ə-taw[6] is the largest city in the State of Kansas[7] and the 49th-largest city in the United States.[3] Located in south-central Kansas on the Arkansas River, Wichita is the county seat of Sedgwick County and the principal city of the Wichita metropolitan area.[1] As of the 2010 United States Census, the city population was 382,368;[3] as of 2014, it was estimated to have increased to 388,413.[4] In 2014, the estimated population of the Wichita metropolitan area was 641,076, and that of the larger Wichita-Winfield combined statistical area was 673,598.[8]
The city began as a trading post on the Chisholm Trail in the 1860s, then was incorporated in 1870. It subsequently became a key destination for cattle drives traveling north from Texas to access railroads, earning it the nickname "Cowtown".[9][10] In the 1920s and 1930s, businessmen and aeronautical engineers established a number of successful aircraft manufacturing companies in Wichita including Beechcraft, Cessna, and Stearman Aircraft. The city transformed into a hub of U.S. aircraft production and became known as "The Air Capital of the World".[11] Beechcraft, Cessna, (both now part of Textron Aviation) and other firms including Learjet, Airbus, and Spirit AeroSystems continue to operate design and manufacturing facilities in Wichita today, and the city remains a major center of the U.S. aircraft industry.[12][13]
As an industrial hub and the largest city in the state, Wichita is an area center of culture, media, and trade. It hosts several large museums, theatres, parks, and entertainment venues, notably Intrust Bank Arena. Several universities are located in the city including Wichita State University, the third largest in the state. The city's daily newspaper, The Wichita Eagle, has the highest circulation of any newspaper in Kansas,[14] and the Wichita broadcast television market includes the western two-thirds of the state.[15] Wichita is also home to two large shopping malls, Towne East Square and Towne West Square, as well as the Century II Performing Arts & Convention Center and Kansas's largest airport, Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport.
I looked for a weird food idea and couldn't find one. Maybe Dpageks will show up and tell us?
Wichita is the birth place of Joe Walsh of Eagles and James Gang fame.
Wichita Lineman has been described as the first existential country song.

Lexington, consolidated with Fayette County, is the second-largest city in Kentucky and the 61st largest in the United States. Known as the "Horse Capital of the World", it is located on the Kentucky River in the heart of the state's Bluegrass region. With a mayor-alderman form of government, it is one of two cities in Kentucky designated by the state as first-class; the other is the state's largest city of Louisville. In the 2014 U.S. Census Estimate, the city's population was 310,797, anchoring a metropolitan area of 489,435 people and a combined statistical area of 708,677 people.[3]
Lexington ranks tenth among US cities in college education rate, with 39.5% of residents having at least a bachelor's degree.[4] It is the location of the Kentucky Horse Park, The Red Mile and Keeneland race courses, Rupp Arena, the world's largest basketball-specific arena, Transylvania University, the University of Kentucky and Bluegrass Community & Technical College.
George Clooney is from Lexington, KY and recently won a lifetime achievement award. I would have included the music from Oh Brother Where Art Though but he didn't actually sing any of that.
Kevin Richardson of the Backstreet Boys is from Lexington.
Naomi, Wynona, and Ashley Judd are from Lexington. Ashley is an enormous supporter of the Kentucky Wild cats but I don't hold that against her.
Naomi and Wynona were amazing. This video begins like some weird acid trip.

Des Moines - Home to many culinary abominations. First up, crab Rangoon pizza at Fong's:
Next, have you ever wished there was a sandwich that combined the blandness of a plain hamburger with the messiness of a sloppy joe? If so, the Maid-Rite is the answer to your prayers:
And finally, I have never understood why Iowans feel compelled to take a perfectly good pork chop (note to self: grill pork chops tonight for dinner!), pound it into oblivion until it is flat and big as a hubcap, bread it and fry it, and then serve it on a tiny bun, but nevertheless I present the ubiquitous and ridiculous Iowa pork tenderloin sandwich:

I will stand in defense of pork tenderloin. Serving it on a ridiculously small bun instead of covered in saw mill gravy however, is a ridiculous waste of such a finely friend food.

And as for Kansas, have you ever thought that all a Maid-Rite needs is more bread, less meat, and some sauerkraut mixed in? No? Well, too bad, because the bierock is Kansas's signature foodstuff:

That is because they didn't hold the bun and place a nice payer of gravy on it. That may be, though I wouldn't eat it with gravy in any event. So maybe that's my problem with it.
