“Que Sera Sera” (whatever will be will be will be)... As I was lying in our bed this oh-dark-hundred morning listening to the gentle breathing of my ever confident wife, jealously wondering how she can be so sure of our future, I realized that this song had once again crept into the back door of my brain. God, its been forty years! It was the theme song of my high school years, the seemingly steeped in innocence Doris Day’s weekly admonition to those lesser souls who were worried that they or their loved ones might soon be leach food in a Vietnamese rice paddy or be fuel for a racially charged Molotov cocktail in the burg. In short, it was as appropriate as the specter of hundreds of very successful middle aged lawyers hanging by their phones like teenaged girls two weeks before the Prom. As one not many-starred-poster asked, “how did we get to this place”? Is it ambition, some nobler purpose, sheer frustration, or just plain get me out of this place mania? OK. As the late, truly great, Ms. Radner would say, “never mind”! Ah, but I DO mind this intrusion into my joy. And so I ask you kind posters, my new found friends of the cyberspace, to post your thoughts on how you will NOT be that teen-aged girl waiting by the phone, but rather the very successful lawyer that you are. For me, my Calendar marches on. Depositions and my Calendar (never lower case) call me into the bowels of the Confederacy (forgive me morgullord, aljsouth and southerner) where I have chosen Amtrak, that hero of the 19th century to chug me there at plantation speed oftentimes out of reach of any cell phone tower. Hah! Que sera sera! This Sunday, fresh from my Dixie victories defending the righteous from the mean corporate samurai, I get with the 20th century and take a cross country jet to sunnier shores where I will switch sides and relentlessly depo the how dare you file poor slob and her nefarious doc, all the while (pretending to be) carelessly cruisin’ the Great Bear state. Jimmy Webb comes to mind “...drinkin’ Margaritas by the old Cantina...” (By now, you must know, I can surely talk out of both sides of my broad mouth.) Yes, I will call my voice mail. No, not every hour (did I pay my cell phone bill? ....) Yup, that’s my story and I’m stickin’ with it...Que sera sera...

Dear Private Attorney,
I thought I was the only one who did not have a life! I wish you the best of luck in your quest. Having done this job for several years now, I can assure you that it is well worth the wait. Let us know where you end up--and I suggest the family size bottle of valium.

“Why, PrivateAtty, Ah DO declare – you make mah leetle heart just flutter…..” What makes my heart flutter is the breath of sanity I sense, when I hear someone refer to those applicants, appellants and those on the Cert as the “very successful lawyer” that each one surely must be.
The query – why are we all so wrapped up in this endeavor ? Hope for the future ? Compensation for the past ? A means to an end or is it the End Game by itself ? The image of “specter of hundreds of very successful middle aged lawyers hanging by their phones like teenaged girls two weeks before the Prom” is intriguing, to say the least… (although hags do not nor have they ever set up camp by their Princess phones in hopes that Moondoggy would call, much less don crinoline and a lace bustier to make an appearance at the Prom. Think more like “Carrie” for us…..)
As I have discussed, in PMs that – surprise, surprise – remained private, with just a few…deep breaths are necessary these last two weeks. Offers will not go out THIS week – SSA told me directly, “the last week of February.” By now the racking and stacking is pretty much done….they know to whom the first wave of offers are going to go…..perhaps Waffle or JTFB will be turning them down because they will be going, like Peejay to DOL, to HUD. Who knows ? We won’t know until that phone rings from the 703 area code. So THIS week is time to run, fly, be free and happy in a state of limbo.
In the meantime, I will continue to be a Defender of the Taxpayer….. “What ? You say they fired you simply because you are a ‘one-eyed, one-horned, flyin’ purple people eater’ ? All apologies to Sheb Wooley aside, I would have to say ‘nay’ to you! Nay, I say! It is because you failed to come to work for the last two months and never called. (You never write; you never call….) So, yes – we fired you, but we would have fired The Flying Spaghetti Monster (http://www.venganza.org/) had he been employed by us and done the same thing.”

Jagghagg, there are times when you make me want to lay Great-Grandpa's 1st US Volunteer Cavalry sabre at your dainty feet.

Pixie - are you there to confirm or refute what the Hagg says? Anyone else have info about JH's statement? Hmmm, perhaps my prediction of leap year phone calls will come true?

jh - I can't let it pass - - who told you the last week of February and when did they tell you? Nooooooooooooooooooo!!! Noooooooooooooooooooo!!! Can you not BREATHE and let this, too, pass from you ? <<sigh>> Alas, you have made worms meat of me..... (Yesterday I called SSA directly, spoke to the lovely Lady Sylvia -- whom I hope each and everyone of you thanked personally for her gentle demeanor and impeccable manners on the phone -- she took my query and went to her superiors and then returned my call with said information.) And my vorpel blade goes "snicker-snack" - this subject is dead and with it's head, I shall go galumphing back.

privateatty: Ah... it's the 21st century, right? CTB: The jet was invented in the 20th century. And I do not consider myself a 21st century man, and it is patently obvious, you do not either. The Governor's depiction of your hero suggests 14th century or 4th? What 's a 1000 years with CTB!

"When I was just a little girl, I asked my mother "What shall I be?"
I do remember my mom singing me that song many times over when I was a little girl. I loved it and Doris Day! My mom tells me that I told her when I was 5 that I wanted to be a lawyer. I don't remember that at all and my path through high school and college (for a few years) was math and science, the subjects I was best in. Thought I wanted to be a math teacher. Loved calculus and chemistry and took them as honors classes in college so I could get all those hours of "A". Worst subjects were English composition and Government/history. So what did I end up doing? Writing for the government! Go figure! I didn't go to law school right after college - I was out a couple years first and applied to law school on a dare. Then they notified me early that I got in and they gave me scholarship so then I had to go.
I love the visual image and good memories that "Que Sera Sera" brings.
Thanks!!
I'm just enjoying myself here at work today. Put my CD of Sacred Spirit Drums in and have been listening to smooth jazz CDs otherwise. Life is very, very good!

** I took the LSAT's because someone I liked very much was taking them and wanted company. I ended up in law school - the other person went off to become a magazine editor.
The paths we take are rarely predictable.

I will spend the weekend relaxing while listening to the mellow, soothing, tones of the bagpipe, or watching "Room Service". The best line: I know I promised [the waiter] that I would give him a part in the play, but now that I've eaten I see things in a different light."

Folks,
I have been having particular issues with concentration. I want to share the best advice I have gotten form a member of this board. Do what follows: Clear off a space on your desk and put the fattest file in it. Work on it until it is done and go on to another. I have done this today--allowing myself to check in with all of you when I completed the project in front of me. I at least have done some good for a client or two today. Remember. . . if we don't get this job in this round, we still have bills to pay. So rally on!

Pixie - are you there to confirm or refute what the Hagg says? Anyone else have info about JH's statement? Hmmm, perhaps my prediction of leap year phone calls will come true? Sorry folks but I was out of town last week and have been out of the loop for the past week with computer problems. The last I heard at first of last week was that it would be Friday. Haven't checked since then to find out any different. But as I told you then, these things are always subject to being pushed back for one reason or another. They were planning on the process to take about a week, so I think they are still on track to finish by the following Friday. I probably should have made it clear that everyone shouldn't expect a call on the first day, anyway. Probably take several days to initially get in touch with everyone. Just stay calm and enjoy the weekend. Pix.

Pix, Here's a stupid ? - if I don't get a call by next Friday, then it's a no go? They are just calling the 150 people with the offers, right? Those not getting offers will just get a letter in the mail, someday, maybe?

Just so people don't get concerned if they don't hear tomorrow, there is a major winter storm forecast for tomorrow in the DC area. Three inches of snow by wake-up time followed by up to a half inch of ice. If it comes close to that I expect government offices to be somewhat empty.

back to the original post: PA, I feel your angst. The best I can do is try to concentrate on other things and do a good job at work. I've done all I can do on this application process, and it is out of my hands now. Very appropriate, your citing Que sera, que sera!

Those not getting offers will just get a letter in the mail, someday, maybe? They will only call those to whom an offer will be made. The non selectees will be informed by letter at some point down the road. I guess we will know tomorrow if the offers are going to start as anticipated or be put off for a day or so. Pix.
