So, what does this mean, "Holy cow! a case coming out bigger than the WV case? That's madness!" It was in response to the Senator indicating that there's a new case coming out that will be bigger than the $600 million fraud case involving Conn, Daugherty and Adkins - I continue to be stunned by this sort of thing. Which Senator?

It looks like Sen Lankford is a pretty conservative Republican, though not necessarily in lock-step with the farthest reaches of GOP conservatives. Since nobody reported anyone challenging his statement, I'm inclined to believe it has a factual basis. Now it would be nice to know some more details about the coming storm.

Maybe June and July will be 57 each, with a big September hire of 59.
It seems like it's always disappointing when we compare what was expected with what was actually done.

Good information about ALJ hiring process, streaming live right now Of note: -5,005 people applied the last time around. -Only 261 individual names for 81 locations on the register -not likely going to be able to hire 250 this year. www.hsgac.senate.gov/I think there was a mistype. What was actually said was that it was "over 5500 applicants." It's around the 43-44 minute mark on the replay.

Even if they do not hire as many that news is great for those on the register now especially folks with flexibility. I remain happily suspended. So I am happy to see continued hiring in future albeit with 5500 applicants (before cuts) decreasing my odds. If it is meant to be it will be. Maybe I should change my screen name to hopetobealjpollyanna

I feel like my little newbie brain is being used for ping pong. My takeaway from Pixie's recent post was that they were going to hire some ALJs this year and then there was some potential that they wouldn't be hiring any during FY17. Quite depressing for me who is part of the refresh wave.
Now it appears that SSA wants to hire a bunch but OPM isn't giving them enough names and OPM is saying it can't because there aren't many names on the register. Quite frankly, it seems that OPM should get called out on that because they waited way to late to refresh if that is really the issue. Of course, SSA is also a fault because the have a sufficient number of qualified candidates that they are just not hiring for whatever reason. Regardless, that has to be seen as great news for those on the register now and makes me hopeful for those who eventually make it on the register from the refresh.

There are charts with past hiring numbers and a discussion of hiring not keeping up with attrition. Some relevant quotes: We currently have 1,506 full time permanent ALJs on duty, but we lose 100 or more ALJs each year through retirement or for other reasons, such as a reassignment to another agency. We hoped to hire 250 ALJs to maintain our ALJ corps, but had sufficient candidates to hire only 196 for SSA positions – a large improvement over previous years. We have hired 52 ALJs in FY 2016 and plan to hire a total of 225. (referring to the refresh exam) While we will not begin receiving lists of potential candidates from this exam until sometime in 2017 With aggressive hiring and partnership with OPM, we plan to bring the ALJ corps to over 1,900 by the end of FY 2018
