A few people close to me know about this process, but not too many. Some I have requested prayers from. Some have recently asked about the process. My stock answer is that "they are now hiring; I could get a call today, tomorrow, any day between now and September, or not at all." Most get a kind of vacant look at that point as they take 3 seconds to imagine what that would be like to go through. Until you go through it, no one knows. No one knows whats it like to wonder indefinitely if you did your Application right. If you are able to get to the next step--then when you do you try not to get ahead of yourself and start roasting chickens that have yet to hatch. You have no idea what its like to step off the Merry Go Round of endless anxiety known as private practice so you dream of it, like being on the beach at a SI photo shoot. Then lo and behold you get the email for an interview and then when you think that the anxiety couldn't possibly get any worse, it does. You don't want to look at the seat you just vacated for fear of seeing something. Will they ever reach me? And then when you can't believe that you must wait any longer you do and it just goes on and on and on. And of course I am just short handing this process which has at this point so many stops and starts. IMHO, nothing prepares you to be a Federal ALJ like this process. Lesser folks have had their guts turned to garbage disposal detritus... Congratulations to all that have been hired. You earned it. Make that your own. And even when its over you have a particular form of PTSD. Like when someone writes "SI photo shoot" and you think, "Wow, I didn't even remember doing a photo at my structured interview."

It's hard for many people to believe that you are still truly in the running for the job when you interviewed a year and a half ago and haven't yet been hired. They seem to think you are deceiving yourself or them out of embarrassment that you weren't hired. I interviewed with the Hennepin County Public Defender's Office 22 years ago and never heard back. So I consider myself still in the running....

Man, truer words were never spoken....people freak out when I tell them I applied in 2013 and that I am at least not out of the running as of yet.......I often wonder if I am in fact deceiving myself!!!! That is yet another reason my eyes are bleeding!!!!

Thank you for the encouragement, Funky, J.!! You are a prince among men - and honeybees. Mmmmm Tupelo honey.
Truer words have never been spoken than by PA. At least the military convenes a selection board with a date certain and a published list, not the drip drip drip of water torture-meeting-career-upending.
After a while, you move to the acceptance that calls will not come. That's the only way one can function in the long-term. It might be a fun academic exercise to POA&M what plants to repot and in what order - and that plan could be used in other situations as well, or to befuddle the random new board member who I think actually believed Sealaw and me about zombies in Richmond. But even as you express external hopefulness to the spouse, you still renew that $700 parking permit for the office.
Keep living life! Then, one day you can be pleasantly surprised! And use your Planting POA&M!
Until then, I'll be rooting for yall. Be the kind of Judge your mom would be proud of. Be a kind, fair, and gracious Judge.

This may be there already, but if it's not, what Pixie did (or didn't do) should be suggested in the "ALJ Hiring FAQ Part 1 - Intro & Hiring Process" ... IMO. I've been in the EXAMINATION process for only a few months, and already wish I could go back and reduce who I've told down to 1 person only ... my wife. In fact, I've considered just telling everyone other than my wife I've been CUT, even if I don't get cut at all OR until much later in the process. Good luck to all who have been staying the course much longer than I ...

There I s no hiding the fact one is on the register waiting for a call when you have to list half the known work universe you belong to as references! They talk to their friends and pretty soon everyone you see everyday wants an update on your status! I didn't even consider the humiliation factor that goes along with this process when I applied.

(There's a lot on the Board about references that you can look up if you're interested.)

This is why I only told those with a need to know that I had applied. Pixie. I wish I had been that wise. I just had no idea what i was getting into..... I understand completely Gaidin (and Gary). There is nothing worse then trying to explain to loved ones and friends you have been through testing, interviews, etc. and have been waiting for "x" number of years, but you haven't been hired yet. You inevitably receive the comment of "Well, I guess that opportunity or job fell through" as you try to explain you are still in the running for a position as you are on OPM's Register of Eligibles. Until you actually go through the process yourself, it is hard for others to understand. Now those who are hired by an agency within the first three to six months of making the Register you understand the process, but you really don't understand the pain and anguish of those who have lingered for more than a year or two or more. I know the pain and anguish as I was there. So, I really feel for those waiting the longest. Candidates like Gaidin, Gary, Lucklady2, Sealaw90, 71Stretch, Ace Midnight to name a few of many such candidates. You all are my heroes and deserve much respect for sticking with it, being great Board members and giving back to the Board Community and not giving up the dream. I will continue to root for all of you and anyone in that position. I hope your offers come soon! Good luck.

Best advice is radio silence. Don't lie to anybody but just let it fade into the background.

This thread has certainly taken a dark turn. We should be celebrating the victors here not dragging them down into our depths. Dark depths. Soul swallowing depths. Nightmarish foresaken depths.

My husband told me he's given up all hope of me ever getting the call. Talk about a downer. I'm not even on this cert. When I told him there was a chance for September, he just rolled his eyes.
