I didn't realized Duane had more or less copied this from the Taj Mahal record, until you said so. I found it, and he did. Two things stand out: Duane's phrasing is impeccable, and it is richer than the Jesse Ed version. Secondly, I've always wondered, but never understood, how he was able to play with such a tone-with such intensity.

In the Blind Willie Tell and Taj Mahal versions, they sing, "I'm going to the country. Baby, do you want to go?" Greg Allman changes this to: "I'm going to the *concert*...do you want to go?--perfect for the times.

Taj had a great cut with the song, and Jesse Edwin Davis did an excellent job the the slide, but Duane, as you say, nailed the tone and the intensity. And I think Greg did a better job on the vocals. Duane was able to play with such tone and intensity because he was special. Plus it didn't hurt that he practiced 16 hours a day during the mid 60s. He had the guitar around his neck all of his waking hours. He would carry on a conversation while he was playing. Always had an electric guitar without the amplifier around the house. He would even take it to the bathroom with him. I imagine he took it off when he showered.

He has really nice tone on that cut. Of course he has nice tone on all of them, but this one is fresh as I just heard it. Pixie

So, Christina, I loved that PP&M that brought back some good times when I was about 4 years old. Not sure I understand all of it, even after listening to it 4 or 5 times. I guess a literal reading is not the way to parse it? How about something two years later. In 1971 The Alllman Brothers Band released Statesboro Blues on the Fillmore East album. Can you cue that up? It is a Blind Willie McTell tune, covered bay Taj Mahal and later by the Brothers. Giving credit where it is due, Jessie Edwin Davis probably did the original slide work (on the Taj Mahal cover) that Duane copied, note for note. But still, Duane made it his own. Pixie Not aware of my hubby having stat rape convictions so u were older than 4 back then;) just saying.

Regarding the uncertainty of where one might be called, and of its short report date: "There's a train leaves here this morning, I don't know, what I might be on".
