You will be staying in a suites type hotel (such as embassy suites, residence inn) which means you will have room for your family if they can join you for weekends (unless you are the bady bunch or cheaper by the dozen). If you are lucky they will have found a place in the Inner Harbor area, near the landing area for Fort McHenry, Fell's Point, and other tourist worthy things. Normally, the training is from 8:00 to 4:30 M-F, although they have to allow for the commute to headquarters which is going to be 30 minutes or more (and, no that will not be deducted from the training time - the 8-4:30 is time actually spent in training). They provide a bus. Your weekends are your own, but except for the very last Friday when you will be done by early afternoon, do not expect to leave early for the weekend, no matter how much leave you have acrued.

Thanks so much for this information. It is so hard to plan. Where exactly is the training? I'm not familiar with "HQs." Is this "Woodlawn" or a different location?

I have another question. I am 100% certain that SSA is not like when I was in the military, where we are given time off to move and settle into our new homes.
But do we get any time to pack up and move? How are working people supposed to do this without time off? Do we get paid to stay in a hotel those first 2 weeks of OJT?

Are you a current federal employee? If not, then there is no assistance given. Nor will you be given any time.

Oh, yes. I am a current Fed employee (not SSA).

As to where the training will be, it will be at Woodlawn, but you don't have to worry about that. You just stay at the hotel they assign you and transportation will be arranged for you. (I suppose if you live in Baltimore now, that might be different.) And while I am not familiar with all the benefits for federal employees - this is something you should inquire about from a live person not an anonymous source on the internet - for those coming from outside the federal government, in a few weeks call the HOCALJ of your new office. They may be able to help you a little, but aljsouth is more right than wrong.

Thank you. I do live 43 miles from Woodlawn, so I believe I will be commuting there until we vacate our current home in Maryland.

Oh, yes. I am a current Fed employee (not SSA). Call falls church and ask. They were helpful to my classmates who were fed employees. I have no reason to doubt they will assist you in getting information. Since I was a state ALJ when selected I hesitate to give details of moving assistance, etc. I do know some was given and some of my classmates were able to live in a hotel at gov. expense for a time while looking for an apt or house.

I was informed that training would start on June 2. I don't know the ending date.

I can confirm the June 2 training class start date and that it will last 4 weeks. A friend forwarded a training schedule showing dates and locations for different training classes in SSA including the ALJ training sessions. See you there!

It would be really cool, July, if you posted at least the general outlines of that training schedule.

Of course I can. The chart is labeled "FY 2008 Proposed Training Schedule" and shows training for other positions in SSA but I will only reference the ALJ training unless someone requests information on another position. New ALJ training location is Baltimore, Rooms 11-12. New ALJ training dates are:
April 28, 2008 - May 23, 2008 June 2, 2008 - June 27, 2008* July 6, 2008 - August 1, 2008 August 4, 2008 - August 29, 2008
*I am attending this session.

You will receive this information later. At the present time I don't think the ink is dry on the hotel arrangements yet.

As one who is to attend the second training session, may I assume, as logic would seem to dictate, that we are now to be at our duty stations from May 12th through May 30th?

I believe it is 2 weeks before the training starts that you report to your duty station, but everyone will get official notification of his or her report date.

I believe it is 2 weeks before the training starts that you report to your duty station, hence the April class would report April 14, June on May 19, July on June 23 and August on July 21. Did you forget the May class in there? The June Class reports on 6/22.

June 22 is a Sunday and the first day of the pay period, hence the 6/22 group would actually present themselves at their new office the next day, June 23. For training you will travel to Baltimore on the Sunday (and presumably earn travel comp time) so you can be at headquarters bright and early Monday morning. Except for April, the classes report to their duty stations in the month before the month in which they report for training in Baltimore.

My email stated that you would be at your duty station for 2-3 weeks prior to training. It is my understanding from other posts on this site that the effective date for the second class is May 11, meaning they report to their duty station on May 12. This means they would be at their duty station for three weeks before going to training, which is consistent with the email.

I spoke with my HOCALJ and asked if I could take leave the third week of 5/26 (Memorial Day week) to go home and pack. I also wanted to see my family in between going to my new office and training. My HOCALJ did not have a problem with me taking leave but I am already a Federal employee with available leave.
