Duda's, at the corner of Thames and Bond in Fells Point, has phenomenal crabcakes and a deep, deep, deep selection of beers. All of Duda's other Pub Grub is commendable as well. Do not be put off by the "divey-look" of the place. (I think that the atmosphere lends authenticity . . . ) I have been known many times to drive from Alexandria, Virginia, to Duda's for a meal!
Vaccaro's Italian Pastry Shop in Little Italy is an awesome place for dessert, too.
I envy all of you who have the opportunity to spend several weeks in Downtown B-More. Be prepared, though. B-More is like no other place I know of in the States!

I second the recommendation of Vaccaro's! They are truly decadent deserts. And not too far from there I got to sit and watch a great game of Boche Ball. There's also a huge bookstore (can't remember which chain) over by ESPN-Zone. For those of you in B-More in June, the Hon Fest in Hampden is a hoot! www.honfest.net/ They have some great bar-b-que and the Miss Hon fest is a blast. For those of you in the first class, don't forget to go scope out the Tidal Basin in DC if the cherry trees are still in bloom.

as a maryland resident and frequent visitor of b'more, i highly recommend restaurants on charles streets - specifically Sotta Sopra. I plan to be there more than once.
The Black Olive in Fells Point is excellent as well - especially for fish. Wonderful Greek restaurant.
B'more recently came out with their top 50 restaurants - but only 44 made the cut. grab a copy before coming. worth the read.

Italian section is wonderful. It is not far from inner harbor and near some of the hotels used in the past.
Ask about it and where to get real Maryland crab cakes, superb.

Sabatino's and/or Chiapparelli's, in that order.
Go to Bertha's and eat mussels, and if you like Bertha's Mussels you can eat Sisson's joint. (Famous bumer sticker re: two related eateries.
Go to the market and eat a sausage at Polock Johnny's.
Enjoy.

Try Charleston, Louisiana, Brass Elephant. . . Hungry for ethnic food? Ambassador Dining Room serves up authentic Indian cuisine. . . Hey, I think it's time for me to make another road trip to B-more. Too bad I will not be with you all in training classes!

go to Chowhound.com and post a message inquiring about the type of food you'd like to explore and in what areas. You can also search their boards for prior posts. Chowhound is the best website for foodies. Also, if you're staying in the harbor area, which is likely, there's a Whole Foods grocery store down there, which is quite nice.
