As someone who missed the last round of hiring by a couple of points, I was hoping this OPM letter was at least directed to those people who would make the next cert. But as the Morgan Freeman character said in the Shawshank Redemption, "hope is a dangerous thing". I know with a small cert of 39 people I am still too far down to make it, even given my selection of 60+ cities. I had resigned myself to wait until there was a big hire in 2009 where I thought I would have a better chance. Now this. Why must OPM taunt me!
Is there any pattern who received the 3/25 application manager letter? Did any folks who have already been hired get one? Only folks who did not make the cut before? As usual, it is probably senseless to try to make any sense of this. Hope is a dangerous thing.

Two more transfers for sitting ALJs as of this week. One is going to Seattle and the other to Dallas. Looks good for another cert on the way as soon as the transfer list is addressed.
Congratulations to the ALJs finally receiving those transfers!

I did not see any March 08 letter on my application, but I did not check it until today.
I received the availability letter six times from OPM in the last round. So go figure!

<<the other to Dallas>>
Do you know if the transfer was to Dallas-North (Merit Drive) or Dallas-Downtown (Pearl Street)?

IS THERE ANY WORD ON THE NEW CERT? UNSUBSTANTIATED RUMORS WILL DO. Does anyone have an idea of which cities will be on the cert, specifically? (Pixie--are you there? I left some milk out for you--cookies, too). Just making conversation . . . . ;D

If you look at my post of 3/25, you'll see that someone from personnel in SSA told me that it would be "about two weeks". That brings us to next week, sometime, according to her estimation. But, who knows?

Someone else on the board will probably hear about it before I do. Didn't see the milk or the cookies. If the milk and cookies were gone the next morning, some Goblin* may have gobbled them down before a pixie could get there. Pix. _______ *Goblins are not friends of pixies; they are big, ugly, slow moving, and slow witted creatures who like to steal the treats left for us. If we see a Goblin, the protocol we use is to clap our hands together three times and say: "Gobble, Gobble, Goblin Go!" and then watch them lumber off into the distance. You might try it and see if it works for you.

No, you aren't a Goblin. You're just a dumb dog.

I am hearing rumors that there were only 135 hired out of the 150 initially proposed. If so, and the new cert includes those numbers already approved, then 25 + 15 = 40, so cert would be 120? Anyone else hearing that?

Anyone else hearing that? There were about that hired....I heard 134. SSA filled transfer requests before filling with Baby ALJs. The jobs not filled (declinations) will be folded into the small hire. Cert will be for about 32 slots. (96, maybe 100, names on the cert.) Class will be in August.

Any "rumors" about where those 32 slots might be located?

I contacted SSA today because I had not received a rejection email. In discovering the email failure that accounted for my non-rejection, I learned the following:
It is likely that the next round will start in about a week. The process may be a bit different. OPM would send the initial info to SSA without a mass email (or mass emails) to those on the certificate. SSA will then send out a list of locations for people to indicate locations in which they are most interested. Interviews would not be repeated for those who already have had them. There would be some old locations and some new locations.
Best luck to all of us, and we should start counseling each other to "Breathe!" again.

The language is pretty close to what I actually heard. I don't know whether it was merely a casual use of language, intended to refer to the process we've previously experienced. I think that was the way I understood that particular phrase -- as a replication of the prior request for any change in location availability.

SSA will then send out a list of locations for people to indicate locations in which they are most interested. Am I to understand that if we have more than one city on the new cert, we will be asked, prior to the interview, to declare a preference? This seems to be a major change in the process from the prior round. Can any of the elders weigh in on this? The last time (after SSA corrected itself), SSA asked each candidate to identify cities on the candidate's specific geographic preference list where the candidate would not go if offered a position. (And, if I recall correctly, SSA indicated that the candidate would not be considered in the future for the identified cities.) I suspect that SSA will adopt a similar procedure for the next (smaller) Cert. But, who knows?

I believe ALJhunter is correct. You don't get a preference, but can remove a site from your list.
Once again think very carefully before removing a site. The more sites you have the more chances you have to be selected. On the other hand, it you really won't take a job at a site if offered, then take it off your list.

On the SSA web page, updated April 14, 2008 regarding the backlog initiative the following was written:
"In January 2008, ODAR received authority to hire additional ALJs. After analysis to identify locations for additional ALJs, ODAR requested a second certificate from OPM. "
Seems the new cert has been requested and is on its way from OPM.
I did not post the link to the page.
