I must be super crazy, because just two days after my SSA interview, my immediate thought upon hearing this was whether I should try again and see if I get a better score. And hopefully another SSA interview 😊 Absolutely not. You are lucky to be where you are. You could apply again, fail to make the cut at any of the "gotchas" and lose everything. Pixie

Wow! It would be great for those who want to expand their GALs, but other than that, we don't need anymore competition! Lol!
It's also disturbing to think about how much $$$ is spent on the testing process.

Officially ending my lurker status! What?? I thought the examinations occurred every 3-4 years. I wonder how long our scores (2016 applicants) will be good for. I will be upset that I spent all that time and $ if it's good for only one year.

OMG is right! But remember, folks, it took them 14 months to get us newbies onto the register. There's plenty of time for plenty of hiring between now and then.

Reflecting on this a bit more, it sure would be nice if there were consistent refreshing every 2-3 years. Since Adzell the whole process has been sporadic and uncertain resulting in mad-rush-to-the-gates applications. Esp in 09.
You get folks starting threads like "second thoughts" and "life after ALJ before I've been hired." There are lots of good points in there about how long you would want to do the ALJ job if you are in your 30s/40s. I know some folks on the register who sort of feel similarly - they are mildly surprised they got on and now that's it's a real possibility, they are considering exactly what it means. Not that I wouldn't mind trade places with them!
In ODAR ALJ is the top prize and it's instinct for insiders to apply for it, because you never know when it will come up again. But if testing was occurring on a predictable, consistent and recurring basis, I think a lot of people might hold off, get more experience, and get better scores (presumably?) down the road. It would also help avoid burn out, divorce, depression, etc. that could result from having to uproot your life even if you weren't really ready because you had to take the maybe-once-in-a-lifetime chance.

It does seem strange, from a complete outsider's perspective. However, as someone who discovered the board well into the process, I, for one, would welcome an opportunity to expand my GAL. If there's any kind of "re-opening," it seems that might be possible. Does anyone know if they send out a notice to those on the current register that we may open up our GALs? Or, how does that work?

I don't know if this should be taken as "we don't like how many were cut", "we don't like the people that made it", or "both." Could the future hiring targets be much higher than we anticipated? Maybe the first, but unlikely the second. They haven't even met most of us yet. They can't not like us in advance.

Taken with the email reported previously, this tells us: 1. It will be a refresh with new applicants; 2. There will be the opportunity for those currently on the register to modify their GALs; 3. The current register will likely not be terminated for at least two years.

My brain just exploded and my eye twitch is definitely sticking around now.
To clarify--this is last year all over again? BUT if we made the register and don't think we totally bombed the ODAR interview--we should just sit tight? My understanding is that if we re-apply now we will remove our current score? Or am I wrong and there is nothing to lose by reapplying because by the time the new NORs come out we will already have been hired or passed over a few times?

Based on what you relayed, stevil, it sounds like they may be moving on down to the next higher-scoring subgroup. I wish everyone in that group the best of luck! And thanks for sharing the intel! They are not doing that.

If you just got on the register and are on one or more certs, your score must be reasonably good. If I were you I wouldn't reapply. I'd sit tight and hope that at some point they hired me. 3. It is unclear that retaking the test on a refresh would get you another SSA interview (assuming you're successful in getting back on the register). 4. I believe (but check this out before acting on it) if you reapply you remain on the register with your current score until you get an NOR on the new testing.
