Chomping at the bit. C'mon with the email invites to DC! Please? So none of you know whether you passed the first phase and will find out when you get the email? Or do you know if you passed and are just waiting to set the dates in DC? Pixie

I have heard nothing, though I’m not champing at the bit for results; I have hope until that email comes through.
That being said, after reading threads on this Board I think I’m okay if I don’t get invited to DC. Though the job would be amazing, it seems like a not-insubstantial investment of time and money that may never pay dividends, even if one lands on the register.

If you have the financial flexibility, make a mini vacation out of it. I scheduled my testing on a Thursday -Friday, brought the family and flew back on Sunday. It was a good family experience regardless of whether I ever get the call.

I still think SSA ALJs might not be impacted by a ruling against SEC, but it certainly casts a bit of shade over the whole thing. Now watch, the emails will come tomorrow, some sort of automated batch send. Or not. After all, Monday is a holiday! Smiles to all!

Every minute that I wasn’t testing or interviewing was spent walking my old haunts, hitting my favorite tourist spots, or spending time with friends. I was lucky and got to go in the winter, when the prices are cheaper (and the weather feels mild for those of us in Upper Craplandia). D.C. is truly one of my favorite cities, and I will take any excuse for a visit. Have they ever scheduled the D.C. component for cherry blossom season? God, I hope not. Of course, as soon as you get past cherry blossom season, it’s 8th grade field trip season. Just awful.

Is that like dibs on shoveled out parking spots? For dibs, you have to put a folding chair on it.

I can here Barney Fife now. Well, I don't know how they do things over in Mt. Pleasant but here in Chicago....

I thought everyone in MT. Prospect had three car, heated garages! No? I got rid of my car years ago (gotta live in the city, you know), and really do not miss the shoveling out. But will admit shivering whilst waiting for the CTA is not a favorite activity. Hurry back 32 degrees!

Thus, if they help maintain a parking space they become......working stiffs.

Going by the last round (which admittedly doesn’t necessarily mean anything this time around), we should be hearing something in roughly three days. With that falling on a Saturday and with the possible pending shutdown, maybe they’ll take pity on us and send DC invites on Friday instead of leaving us wait until next week or later. 🤞🏻

And they do schedule during Cherry Blossom season, and that is when I was there. The weekends were really bad, but during the week was okay. I'd been to DC before so I did not feel a large desire to see the monuments, though the Martin Luther King Memorial was new and we did spend some time there. Also caught some field trips too (more of those during the week). But its all about how busy you want to be, and if you go with the flow it really wasn't that bad.

It is beautifully done, and the way that MLK is sort of staring across the tidal basin at Jefferson serves as a great reminder of the evils that our founders engaged in. A few years ago, I had the chance to visit the memorial on MLK day. There were people laying flowers and saying prayers and just a lot of genuine, organic outpouring of emotion. It was a profoundly moving experience.
The main reason I wouldn't want to do the testing component during cherry blossom season is that I'm cheap AF. Winter hotel prices are so much more reasonable.

It is a worthy addition, and was truly wonderfully composed and executed. I am very glad we went. Regarding travel, there are a lot of options. I just Airbnb'd a place a block from OPM. It was a great location and very reasonable. Not sure if it is still available as it was a GW student's place and he had just completed his degree. But there are a lot of ways to avoid the sticker shock.
