Great info. 10 years ago I wish I had changed my focus from SSA ALJ to looking for state positions.

Weirdness at USA Jobs website-- put in the 0905 into the search and got .......zero! "No jobs found"
Very Odd. Then tried Attorney. Got a "suggested word: counsel." ''

USAJobs is currently down, according to their official Twitter account.
Edit: down isn’t the right term, they have some kind of technical glitch so search results all come up empty.

So much for the massive reset in favor of those in private practice! As of a few minutes the site is up and running. Saw this: only open for 2 days, and first 50 resumes. Judging from the duties they need a utility outfielder who can jump into any area......and only two days lead. Do you think, just possibly, there is someone they have in mind? www.usajobs.gov/GetJob/ViewDetails/609123000 or are they Dadaists, believing in life as an artform of chance interactions?

Yeah NTEs are a big time "nope" from me. I got a mortgage, and this economy ain't got any sense. No way am I trading the roof over my head for a few years of increased pay and the possibly vain hope that they make me a full time employee (unless there's an administration change) or I find another job in the federal government. My student loans do not incentivize risk-taking activity like that.

I would normally jump on that, but I just can't give up my career position to be called "judge" for three years.

NTEs are not ideal at all. Especially if you have responsibilities such as a spouse, children and/or mortgage.
But if you have been an AA for SSA approaching five plus years capped at a GS12, what are you supposed to do?
Drafting decisions and performing CEOs while questioning why you ever attended law school. Being an AA does things to your mind.
Is applying to a NTE under these circumstances worthwhile?

The AA position with SSA hearing offices has very limited advancement opportunities. The work isn't particularly well respected outside of (or even inside) SSA. Anything you can do to continue to build "lawyer skills" is worthwhile.

I'm in those straights. I am seeing a counselor for therapy. If being an AA is doing things to your mind, I'd suggest you consider doing something similar. It's not a joke, nor is it something to be proud over. Once you've gotten that straightened out, then return to whether or not an NTE is right for you, rather than if it is a useful escape mechanism. You can't outrun your own mind.

Reply to medinadodger with more than 5 years SSA experience at GS12 wondering what you should do. I say make a move. Don’t be at SSA at your 10 year mark. Keep applying. I was just speaking to a former SSA colleague who was hired at USPTO on Trademark side. He stated that the agency likes SSA experience. It reminded me that when I started working at USPTO on patent side my most significant government attorney experience was at SSA. At the time they hired 8 attorneys, myself and another selectee had SSA background. In addition of the 8 attorneys on staff, I had met one when she was in SSA decision writer training. Point SSA is a stepping stone.
I was also an NTE at SSA . I left after 18 months for another opportunity, fearing that the position would end. But actually many of my co-NTE folks will retire from SSA. But that was 20 some years ago. I would not gamble on NTE unless I could financially afford risk of being unemployed or underemployed for a year (while seeking new job)
Last advice I wish I had considered more non-Attorney jobs. Equal opportunity specialist, fraud analyst, compliance, civil rights analyst, FOIA. I was an NTE equal opportunity specialist in fair housing at HUD. Did excellent job, enjoyed more variety in work than SSA. Traveled to work at field offices, respected. (But at end of term position ended. Most harshly that NTE experience has not given me any advantage on hiring. The tenure does not allow me to apply for positions limited to former competitive service employees. Tenure/status conferred in DAB NTEs would definitely be a consideration).

So does the DAB MOD posting in the other thread confer tenure/status even though it's a 3y term? I couldnt tell from the posting. The posting says says "Acceptance of an excepted service appointment from applicants in the competitive service will require a written statement of understanding when voluntarily leaving the competitive service. This position does not confer non-competitive conversion to the competitive service." Not sure what this means for future job application preference or future benefits.
Also, thanks for the heads up on those other "non attorney" jobs, as I hadn't thought of those. Does anyone know of any similar types of positions that pay almost as much as an attorney ?

I am grateful that I am employed but I do not enjoy being an AA at all.

Anyone see the Hearings Operation Management Specialist(GS11/12) posting for current OHO employees with a Doctorate? That narrows the available pool down to attorneys. I think this is a way to get an attorney back into the office regularly to perform office maintenance work. The job description discusses responsibilities related to budget and occupational health and safety requirements, but I think that the actual duties would consist of opening mail to sort bills and maintaining Covid cleanliness standards for in-person hearings. While not a supervisory position, I guarantee that this "Management Specialist" job is not a union position, and the HOMS will be required to go into the office to perform these duties. The description also states that the HOMS assists the HOCALJ and HOD, but there is no mention of a GS. This position may be the replacement for Group Supervisors. From my reading of the post, one does not have to have a doctorate to qualify for the position if they have the requisite experience for GS11 or GS12. To go straight into a GS11 spot without experience, one must have a Ph.D. or L.L.M. (J.D. wouldn't cut it). Furthermore, one cannot qualify for GS12 at all bases on experience alone. Based on personal experience, the local HOMS selectee was a former admin assistant turned HCSS (after restructuring), not an attorney.
