That's one of those things that sounds cool initially, but would likely be miserable after a few months. Nice place to visit for a couple of weeks, though. When I was in the USAF, we test fired our ICBMs to Kwaj (they still do, I'm sure). Didn't use real nukes, of course. Do you know the angle of launch (in degrees) which gives the greatest range for an ICBM? I am assuming it would be the same as for a cannonball or an artillery round. Not to get off topic, but this thread is rather boring, with all due respect to FH. We try to have a "just the facts " thread. Now if you want fireworks then we can start up the Supreme Court thread again. Just trying to be sure everyone see the interesting and the judgey as we seem to see precious little ALJ or similar slots.

Anyone have any knowledge about the General Attorney Advisor job with Department of Health and Human Services? Closes 01/26/2022 goes to a 14. Thank you. My experience is that sometimes the applications seem to sit there-- to the point where I asked (always a gamble) was told there was a hold up because someone hadn't been appointed, and if the app was the last calendar year to reapply. So expect little clarity, apply, but don't hold your breath.

I applied as well for the NLRB ALJ position, but as of last week, I was advised that the Agency is still reviewing applications.

Sources tell me that due to the high level of Agency hiring, the ALJ hiring is lingering and no candidates have been contacted for interviews yet . Thank the OPM for their valuable assistance in all hiring decisions as I'm sure they are better able than experts in the field to determine which applicants meet the minimum qualifications. The process, in brief: OPM reviews applications for minimal qualifications and refers to the Agency, the Agency has a panel of, in this case, ALJ's who review the minimally qualified and rank those applicants, the panel refers those ranked candidates to a different panel of ALJ interviewers. The candidates making it to this stage are contacted for interviews. After the interviews the candidates are then ranked, and that is where the voodoo magic happens and a lucky candidate/s are selected (unclear whether final decisions are made by a) the Board, b) the ALJ's, or c) a magic 8-ball--as this hiring process is new since they've always hired from the register, using almost exclusively practicing ALJ's from other fields/SSA. I've also heard that there will be multiple ALJ's hired based on this posting, although it remains unclear how many will ultimately be selected. And, as if to complicate this further, because this system is so painfully slow, by the time the initial offers go out, often the candidates have either accepted other jobs or just given up, so often times the second, third and fourth tier candidates get a crack at open positions.

It is hard to imagine that this process is better than the register. It is certainly less objective.

Chief ALJ position with EEOC open to the public (though my gut level feeling is current or former EEO personnel will have a greater liklihood of success. But hey, go for it! The worst they can say is (traditional response). www.usajobs.gov/job/645771600

I see they are still listed as open. Good luck! I applied for this job today. Much like the old SSA exam, I was asked if I had seven years of litigation experience and if I was a disabled vet. That’s it. Seems to me that they are looking for disabled vets, not insiders.

Interesting one. Looks like an administrative judge (AJ) rather than ALJ, right? (With the EEOC).

Interesting one. Looks like an administrative judge (AJ) rather than ALJ, right? (With the EEOC). Yes. AJ, not ALJ. If you read the description on USAJOBS, it's actually a SES position, so much higher classification than the typical AJ (ceiling at GS-14) positions at EEOC.

ALJ--Occupational Safety And Health Review Commission , Denver Colorado Open to the public but a 4 day open/close makes me wonder if they are limiting apps for processing or there is a chosen one and we're window dressing on their process of annointing the chosen. But hey, it is there to be applied to. www.usajobs.gov/job/651342300
