quality of life.
It may be the last clean city in America.
Do you remember the poster "Expose Yourself to Art?"
That photo was taken in Pioneer Square.
Lived there for a year and a half. Much too short a time.

Portland is, indeed, a beautiful city. Intersected north to south by the Willamette River, and bordered by the mighty Columbia on the north. Plenty of hills and great parks, including a fabulous rose garden. The population, by and large is friendly and unpretentious, with a sprinkling of eclectic personalities to keep things interesting.
It is within minutes of Mount Hood and the Oregon Cascade mountain range to the east; good skiing is close and great skiing isn't much farther. Drive west for a couple of hours and you are at one of the most spectacular stretches of coastline in the country. On the way you will pass through some premier vineyards, by the way. Oregon Pinot Noir is superb.
Portland is big enough to have plenty of wonderful restaurants and fine museums, but not so big as to be impersonal and out of scale. Funky and unique neighborhoods, and a pretty good public transportation system. Not to mention Powell's book store; a book lover's Garden of Eden.
If you enjoy outdoors activities (hiking, skiing, wind surfing, kayaking, rock climbing, bicycling, etc.), and prefer your politics on the liberal side, Portland should be on your list. I have never lived there, but I love to visit when I can.
No MLB or NFL, but folks in Portland seem to manage fine without them.

Extremely short-staffed office which will have difficulty working up cases for new ALJs and one new ALJ will not have a window to view Mt. Hood or Mt. St. Helens; very expensive place to live (though cheaper than other West Coast cities); very liberal; rainy; don't move here...

We'll "....say a little prayer for you."
If ANYONE deserves this job, it'd be you. Pity the poor fool counsel bellying up to your bar...
