Whoa, that's quite a statement. Strong voice, great repertoire for sure! A persuasive argument could be made for Loretta and Dolly, who are also great songwriters. Emmylou and Allison Kraus also sing like larks...but I guess Patsy Cline is as good a measuring stick as anyone. Wonder if Pixie has an opinion... Yes, I definitely have an opinion. I usually agree with Gaidin on most topics, but can't agree here. Patsy Cline wasn't probably the finest female vocalist in country music, she was the finest vocalist, not only in country music, but in all genres of music (excluding opera). I put her above even Edith Piaf. If you don't believe me, listen to I Fall to Pieces on decent speakers, not the computer speakers. She was limited by only the material available to her. Pixie I agree that no one can truly appreciate how great Patsy Cline was- and I also know this is mostly fun and that opinions are like buttons. But if we're identifying the finest female vocalist in any genre (except opera), let me throw Aretha Franklin and Etta James into the discussion!

Yes, those two are tops. Aretha was talented. Etta James was talented and troubled. She speculated that her father was Minnesota Fats, the pool great, whom she met briefly in the mid 80s. Fats denied it. Fats' widow denied it. We will never know.

I think the true testament to Patsy Cline's greatness is this. She died in 1963. If you go back and listen to almost any recording of an artist from that era who had the opportunity to later be recorded on better equipment they start to sound as good as she did singing into much more primitive equipment.
I love Dolly, Loretta, Allison, Emmie Lou, and have no argument against Aretha Franklin (who was divinity) but all of them got a shot at real modern recording equipment. I limited my statement to country music because I find it hard to compare across genres when we're talking about the greats.
Sort of like comparing Peyton Manning to Michael Jordan.

Re: Patsy Cline, a quick story. I went to college with the husband of Patsy’s granddaughter, and we remain good friends. We first met in a recording technology class, when we partnered up on a project. He invited me to “his wife’s grandfather’s house,” where there were some old recordings of “her grandmother” we could use for the project. “Oh, her grandmother was Patsy Cline.” Yes, please! It was surreal to be in the home of Patsy’s widower, who still shows up for his great-grandchildren’s sports/school events. And I fully agree, she sounded better on old equipment than most vocalists do on modern equipment. One of a kind.

And I fully agree, she sounded better on old equipment than most vocalists do on modern equipment. One of a kind. You must be talking about Charlie Dick, * Patsy's widower, who died 4 or 5 years ago in Nashville. He was in his early 80s and had spent his life representing Patsy's musical and personal legacy since she was killed in the plane crash in 1963. Patsy was killed because her manager/pilot, Randy Hughes, was an inexperienced pilot and took off from Dyersburg, TN, after a refueling stop, even though the FBO advised him to wait a while as a strong front was approaching from the direction they were headed (Nashville). His famous last words, "Oh if it gets bad, we'll just turn around and come back." Yeah, right. He never made it past the Tennessee River, having crashed near Camden, TN, slightly south of his intended course to Nashville. A witness heard the plane, which was in the clouds at the time, on a northerly course and then saw its lights descending from the clouds at a 45 degree angle and shortly thereafter heard the crash. Randy had a private pilot's license with 160 total hours and no instrument ticket. He was told weather at destination was below FAA minimums for VFR flight (visual flight) and the enroute weather was marginal. An experienced pilot would not have attempted the flight. It was dark, with a ceiling below 500' in spots . Randy got in the clouds and became disoriented. He no longer could just turn around and go back. As a result of his inexperience, Patsy, Cowboy Copas and Hawkshaw Hawkins were killed returning from a concert in Kansas City, I think it was. ________ * Charlie was her second husband, Patsy having been married at the time she met Charlie, but that is a story for another telling.

I hadn’t remembered he passed. We moved away from Nashville a bit before that (back in the days of common sense hardship transfers). He always seemed to be having a good time relishing in his family.

While I was in law school, one of my housemates was the drummer for Sordid Humor. I used to enjoy their gigs at clubs in the City. This is one of their songs.
