,, Here's to you Jackson! I hate to start trouble - but Johnny and June were singing about Jackson, TN - NOT Jackson, MS. There are some disputes about which Jackson when this song was written but statements attributed to Cash have him saying he was “gonna take her down to see Carl Perkins in Jackson.” Perkins was from the Jackson, TN area. Lesser known fact - Jackson, TN is home to the International Rock-A-Billy Hall of Fame.

And in keeping with my Islands theme, did you know Neal McCoy did a duet with the great Charley Pride? Talk about overcoming adversity, Charley had to be marketed as “Country Charley Pride” so he wouldn’t be mistaken from the album covers as an R&B musician. Of course, we know a lot more about country roots now.

Of course, any time you need reassurance, there's always Tammy! (Gotta stay optimistic)

This was the first one to pop into my mind.... Too bad he was so good looking . . . and so very flawed. It broke my heart when he died. Pixie

Of course, any time you need reassurance, there's always Tammy! (Gotta stay optimistic) While this is one of her best songs, she is weak in this performance. Maybe because the "band" isn't up to par, and just can't support her? For me this performance was painful. Tammy was so much better than this video shows. Nothing against bountiful for posting this as it raises our awareness of Tammy, but for we musicians, things are more complicated than most would think. The below "video" is the original as recorded in the studio, I believe. She and Billy Sherrill wrote the song in less than 20 minutes. While her lower register work is her best, she is still in tune on the high notes. I'm with her all the way. Pixie

Pixie, you’re right about the original being a better recording. It’s also one of the best country songs of all time. I just prefer posting live performances of songs. It’s tough to find good videos from the ‘60s.

It’s tough to find good videos from the ‘60s. You are right about that. The best ones are almost always the easiest and the quickest to write. As I said, she and Billy Sherrill wrote this one in less than 20 minutes. I wonder how long it took Hank Cochran and Harlan Howard to write, I Fall To Pieces? My favorite part of that song is when she comes back in with the vocals just after the bridge. It is one of my favorite songs of all time. Pixie

Patsy Cline was probably the finest female vocalist in country music.

Patsy Cline was probably the finest female vocalist in country music. Whoa, that's quite a statement. Strong voice, great repertoire for sure! A persuasive argument could be made for Loretta and Dolly, who are also great songwriters. Emmylou and Allison Kraus also sing like larks...but I guess Patsy Cline is as good a measuring stick as anyone. Wonder if Pixie has an opinion...

Patsy Cline was probably the finest female vocalist in country music. Hmm, no question here. Not even close. I had the pleasure of visiting the Patsy Cline Museum in Nashville earlier this year. Everyone was lined up for the Johnny Cash museum downstairs (and nothing wrong with that), but, I was goin' upstairs.

I usually agree with Gaidin on most topics, but can't agree here. Patsy Cline wasn't probably the finest female vocalist in country music, she was the finest vocalist, not only in country music, but in all genres of music (excluding opera). I put her above even Edith Piaf. If you don't believe me, listen to I Fall to Pieces on decent speakers, not the computer speakers. She was limited by only the material available to her. Pixie
