In light of the shutdown, I am not so sure this is a time of unadulterated joy for all. Let me simply say I hope everyone has good health, hope, and someone or something to live in 2019.

It’s good to see folks in good spirits through the shutdown. This one doesn’t seem like it will end soon and unlikely the non-essential workforce will get reimbursed for not working. Could be politician’s new way of saving federal tax dollars- shutting down and not paying. Seems like another Greece.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you folks.

Could be politician’s new way of saving federal tax dollars- shutting down and not paying. Seems like another Greece. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you folks. I posted this in the "Shutdown" thread: "Before it adjourned for the night [Friday night], the Senate passed a bill to ensure federal employees who are furloughed will get back pay. It was passed by unanimous vote, but still will need to pass the House. As long as the federal worker doesn't live paycheck to paycheck, it will eventually work out." Pixie

I am glad to hear folks will be paid. I remember when the City furloughed us for about three weeks and imposed unpaid holidays. It was a 20% pay cut that hit especially hard this time of year due to the multiple holidays. We never got that pay back and I remember how it made life difficult. And the reduced annual earnings really hurt some folks' pension calculations. I think that reduction was in place at least two, maybe three years. But big picture, if you have your health, some time to share, and loved ones to share it with, the holidays can be lovely. Money, sadly, cannot replace those things if they are lacking. Prayers for all and for the DC popinjays to catch a clue and get back to serving the people.
Smile!

As our former mayor once said, never let a good crisis to go waste! Same thing for threads. If I thought Christmas 2018 was ugly, well, this year's version is standing on the shoulders of ugly giants. I lost a loved one and I suspect many of you had the same tragedy. Or the long, crushing fear as you watch a gravely ill loved one fight through it, leaving you to wonder when is it over and who is next?
And, gee, while the temptation is to bemoan how hard it has been, I just can't. Too many others have and are suffering more than I have. And hope is the magic that lets us push through when reason says we're toast. Hope has a remarkably good track record. Besides, we have passed through the darkest day of the year; with the solstice behind us, the days are inching towards the light. We are past the worst, we are here, and we have good reasons to have hope.
So, this week, and every week, I wish for each and everyone, good health, safety, loved ones near and far, and comfort for those who are lonely. Each of us is a statistical miracle, let's keep believing in those miracles. If you can't do it day by day, try hour by hour, or minute by minute, it all adds up to the same thing, trust me, I know!
And yes, we really are all in this together! Smile!
