Happy (ish) St. Patrick's Day

I know that over the past year we have seen a lot of holidays impacted that people generally regard as more important.

But, we lost this one twice.

It is particularly important to me. In all my years working, until this pandemic, it was the only holiday I never worked on. Christmas, Thanksgiving, Yom Kippur, Easter, Yom Kippur, July 4th- I worked them all. But never St. Patrick's.

I've been marching in the parade since I was infant. I can't say I never missed it previously- I slipped on ice one year on the way and managed to concuss myself, and another year I had to attend a mandatory tech rehearsal for a play.

But by and large when the contingent from Donegal started it's way up 5th Ave, I was straggling along with them.

I've spent the day listening to Irish music- I've got a live Black 47 album that was recorded at a show I was at and I swear I can hear myself at one point- still not the same.

So, I implore those who are so inclined, even though it's a Wednesday night and you are likely stuck inside, tip a glass to St. Patrick and his countrymen. And a little prayer that the parade will go on for real next year, and the 260 years to come.

One of the rare good things from COVID is that one of my favorite bands, who play a St. Patrick's day concert every year, is livecasting the concert tonight. I get to "attend" this year, and would not have been able to make it in person even if COVID was not a thing. So raise a glass of your beverage of choice and toast to the old country, where ever that may be for you, and give thanks to those who have come before.
