Strongly encourage talented lawyers who live in the DC area or can re-locate there to apply to DoJ at the Office of Immigration Litigation-Appellate. DISCLAIMER: I do not speak for the office, DoJ, or any other government entity. Office is in Chinatown/Penn Quarter. Has been pretty much all remote since March 2020 but things will reopen at some point www.justice.gov/legal-careers/job/trial-attorney-office-immigration-litigationappellateHave LOVED, LOVED, LOVED my time there. Most folks come in as a GS-15 unless you've only been an attorney for a couple of years or are coming in via the Honors Program. Where do I start? - FANTASTIC SES leadership - Telework - Military friendly for veterans / Reservists - Terrific, hardworking support staff - Social events (hopefully will resume soon) in the office for things like start of football season, Halloween, Christmas, St. Pat's, etc. Always lots of great food and they are able to get permission for alcohol. - Lawyers, not number crunchers run the show!!! - Teamwork / collegial environment / wonderful mentorship program - Intellectual environment where being a smart, creative lawyer is cool - Frequent opportunities to argue before federal courts (mainly the courts of appeals) nationwide - Nearby DoJ-run gyms (at DOJ Main and Judiciary Square offices when they reopen) with shower, weigh room, cardio machines, etc. - Lots of flexibility in schedules - no one monitoring your coming and going. The most important thing? Get your work done and no one really cares what you wear, when you are at your desk, etc. Oh, and yes many folks they hire have some immigration experience. But many of us (including me!!!) did not have that beforehand. It comes down to being a great writer, a dynamic interviewer, having good recommendations, team values, etc. Good luck!!!

Will also add:
1. Racially and gender diverse team of SES leaders 2. Good IT support, including for remote workers 3. Penn Quarter location is good in terms of restaurants, walking distance to multiple Smithsonians (I often take a quick lunchtime walk over to the Portrait Gallery), a couple of blocks from multiple Metros 4. Pre-COVID, we had a fun office softball team that played other government agencies on the National Mall. Hopefully that resumes down the road.
