Hi, Pixie!
Because I feel like the DOL interviews will be of a smaller group of people, I, too, did not want to post and run the risk of breaching anonymity. But I have been asked to interview. I know some have questioned what type of folks they are looking for....I am not an "insider." I am a multi-decade employment trial attorney with some unrelated ALJ experience (state). I thought you may, or may not, wish to share with the group. If you do share this, does anyone know how many spots they are hiring this go around?

Received from a board member. Please see his/her question at the end. Pixie Hi, Pixie! If you do share this, does anyone know how many spots they are hiring this go around? The USAJOBS opening listed 4 vacancies, one at each of the listed locations. DOL has about 40-45 ALJs so that is a hire of about 10%, a significant number for the agency.

Received from a board member:
Pixie- please update the folks interested…
DOL/OALJ - is working through 1st round interviews - straggling interviews should be completed this week. Bulk have been done. The panel will convene likely next week to make recommendations for Round 2. From what they said - then the 2nd panel will provide a list of recommended hires for each office( total of 4 new hires- 1 in each office) to the Secretary/front office. No idea how long it will take for the Secretary to make his selections. Sounded like they did not expect round 2 interviews to start until end of September or early October.
They volunteered info on post pandemic life - they expect you in your assigned office. They value the team building that helps ALJs work with staff and fellow judges.Telework will be allowed. However the number of days allowed will grow based on seniority. So newer judges will likely start with 1 day of telework (post training).

Questions from a board member:
"Hi, Pixie:
Would you mind asking the following:
For those who have been granted a second interview (or if you know someone that has been): 1. Was contact made via email or call to inform and set up the interview? 2. Was/is the interview with a panel of folks or was it with the Chief ALJ of a particular office?
Thank you for any assistance/intel."

Would you mind, please, asking the member that responded to your recent post if he/she knows if the 2nd interview was a panel interview or with less than a panel (e.g. just the chief ALJ of a particular office)? I am trying to figure out my situation relative to a "second" interview.

"Regarding the other board member’s question about the second interview:
The second interview was a panel interview."

From a board member:
""I was interviewed in the first round for the DOL ALJ position. On Saturday morning I received an email email notifying me that I had not been recommended to the Secretary for the position. While the email could have been a form letter it was too kindly written to be termed an FOAD letter. Regardless, its worth noting the DOL seems to have made their hiring decision for the positions."

"Good morning: I received two interviews and received a rejection letter also. Although the rejection letter was complimentary it still meant the same thing. I had an inclination during the process and just my opinion if you were not a sitting ALJ there had been no reason to apply. Guess time will tell. Thank you for posting."
