Yes, today in 1790 the U.S. Coast Guard had its beginnings as President George Washington signed a measure authorizing a group of revenue cutters to enforce tariff and trade laws and prevent smuggling. Perhaps it is doing the same thing today, but the other services have no idea what the role of the CG is. We just know it has some cute little cutters and some nice S&R helicopters. Pixie

services 82 buoys and fixed aids to navigation;
investigates 35 pollution incidents;
completes 26 safety examinations on foreign vessels;
conducts 105 marine inspections;
investigates 14 marine casualties involving commercial vessels;
facilitates movement of $8.7B worth of goods and commodities through the Nation’s Maritime Transportation System.

Yes, "Nice S&R helicopters." Try doing rescue work at night, in weather and while getting shot at. That makes a helicopter—and its crew—awesome. The CG does all of that except getting shot at. So, I would say that makes them almost "awesome." Close enough to awesome in my book. Pixie |
