From a board member:
Pixie,
would it be possible for you to create a thread (anonymous)? here is the topic
I recently learned that the NLRB may live stream it’s unfair labor practice hearings and am curious in any other Agencies have indicated that they too intend to live stream their ALJ hearings?
I do not know the details (for example, I do not know if this is just for high profile cases, or if all of the parties have to consent, or does the ALJ presiding over the Hearing have the authority to Order live streaming etc.)
Now i recognize a “host of issues” I think live streaming might present (such as witness intimidation- many witnesses are already nervous about testifying against their former (or current) Employer and/or Union, issues with sequestration orders, theatrical “grand standing” by opposing counsel etc.)
Just curious in any other Agencies have indicated that their Hearings will be live streamed?

I can't see how SSA would ever allow this. It would be a devastating invasion of privacy. The mere suggestion sounds like yet another scheme to "punish" people who apply for disability or discourage applications by shaming people.

No, SSA would never allow it, but there are other agencies out there that might. Pixie

Many hearings at other agencies are supposed to be public, so it is a problem if they are all by video and the public has no way to watch or even know about them.

Many hearings at other agencies are supposed to be public, so it is a problem if they are all by video and the public has no way to watch or even know about them. I am sure that is true for some other agencies. However, claimants in SSA hearings have statutory rights of privacy that cannot be invaded so don’t look for that to ever happen at SSA.

Party pooper.

Based on all the judge shows there are on TV and based on the number of claimants I have seen with entourages in the waiting room, I think there are a number of claimants who would waive their right to privacy in a heartbeat to allow their hearings to be live streamed. And enough sleazy lawyers who would encourage their clients to do so in the interest of free advertising.
I hope that day never comes, though.
