Although this is a different hiring process that does not involve OPM and the Register, I don't expect that things will be that very different. For example, someone reported that NOW SSA will have a centralized hiring authority. As far as I know, it always has had one - the HR department, formerly headed by the great Bob G, who has retired. Someone else will be steering the hiring ship, but I would be shocked if it wasn't the SSA HR folk.
Second, as Pixie noted, there's a lot of work involved in the hiring process before any offers or calls are made, not the least of which is the alchemy of who goes where. Even though Register ranking is no longer a factor, I believe the Veterans' preference rules still are. In addition, the ability to include several places in a GAL and the necessity of matching office needs and candidates still involves a certain amount of work to get the hiring list put together.
Historically, the agency has little concern for the candidates' vacation or other plans. Historically, we were expected to take no more than a day or two to give a decision (so that if the offer is not accepted, they can go to the next person). Historically, we were given about 2-4 weeks between offer and showing up for our first day of work. I wouldn't expect that to change all that much.

No idea if this is true or not, but someone told me with the latest class they spent almost four weeks in the office before training instead of two. Maybe wishful thinking, but maybe that will make the stars align for today.

I fall into the camp of an early July call based on the August start date. True there's no reason for a delay if ACOSS has made the selections. But on the flip side there's no reason to hurry up the selections or to get notifications out either. The budget passed. Shutdown averted. Crisis over. As long as it gets done before a budget driven deadline or according to some long forgotten arcane policy re why it's done this way the agency usually doesn't care. It's been a longtime reasonable expectation for new appointees to move across the country, close up law practices, for spouses to find new jobs, kids to get enrolled in new schools, etc. etc etc all in a 4 week timeline for years now. And looking back at past announcements it's usually been around August when the board has lit up with congratulations or lamentations depending on which notification you got. Our timing is off because of the timing of this last round of interviews. A March email asking for paperwork and scheduling April interviews hasn't happened before. We used to get notices in June for additional testing in July and then maybe more testing in August (And first round FOADS for those not "higher scoring applicants") and final decisions made in September just before the October budget deadline. Just because the timing for interviews shifted doesn't mean the timing for hiring has. As we always say when dealing with federal agencies. "Never put off until tomorrow what you can do the day before the audit just as well." What you guys don't understand is the amount of time and work required to put a class together. Notifying the selected candidates is a minuscule drop in the bucket. TPTB will make the notifications when all is ready. Pixie I slept really well last night, so calls won’t come today.

I’m buying non-refundable tickets for a vacation in August this weekend…so calls won’t come till next week.
You’re welcome. 😂

Given that last week and this week were the top two choices in the poll, my conclusion is that very few of you would make a good companion on a trip to Vegas...
I certainly would not be useful.

Any chatter on the likelihood of notifications for this week? This Friday has a lot of votes in the poll... Any sliver of information? Someone heard someone's cousin say something at Costco yesterday? A manager said that he thought it would be Friday. Though at this point I’m taking it as taunting me. Seems he was taunting after all. Blacklist the sucker.

B-52's are retiring and doing a farewell residency in Las Vegas this summer. I'm going in August.

I agree, but just outside of Vegas there are mountains. Mountains that are high enough to be cool, so cool that A/C isn't needed. Pixie

Paraphrasing Ben Franklin, but Vegas is like houseguests or fish. Stinks after three days. Fun for a long weekend, but not much more. To be fair, if you get off the Strip and see where people actually live, and get out into the surrounding natural areas, it's nicer for a longer stay. I'd like to do a long motorcycle ride out there one day.

Mountains of chips that are high enough to be cool, so cool that tickets to AC/DC (or whoever the current show is) are free.

Veterans preference applies only to competitive service as a practical matter. For excepted service, it applies only as practical I believe is the phrasing. Anyone really determined to avoid hiring a veteran can probably figure out a way to do it.

Veterans preference in the excepted service is basically a nullity. It is referred to a favorable factor but it is only one among many and it is only as important as the selecting official feels it is.

I think it will not be the week until we quit asking if this is the week. Any other news on training dates, etc? Still think it is odd for an EOD in middle of pay period should that happen.

Does anybody have a handle on how the debt limit agreement could affect things like ALJ hiring? In my rudimentary understanding, the deal will basically maintain FY 2023 non-defense discretionary spending levels in FY 2024, with a tiny (1%) increase in FY 2025. Assuming some inflation in 2024 and 2025, I guess this amounts to an effective budget cut for federal agencies compared with what they would have received if not for the deal. At the same time, though, I suppose some agencies might fare better than others, depending on how the (somewhat diminished) pie is sliced. So will this affect ALJ hiring, and if so, by how much? Wild speculation is welcome here.
