I can't speak for the other ALJs-turned magistrates, but Judge Denney served many years as a trial judge in the US Army Reserve, and he is currently an appellate judge on the US Army Court of Criminal Appeals. Also has previous federal prosecution experience. As someone who served with him, I'm biased, so I will add he is an all-around great guy with a stellar reputation in the military legal community.
Only other federal magistrate I have known is an old college friend who gave up a law partnership at a Big Law firm to take that gig. Yale grad, federal court of appeals clerk, and argued a case at SCOTUS. In his case, he was looking for a slower pace and more control over his schedule.
