Thanks so much for sharing this item. I had not heard about it before. Also, I could not help but notice that we are still United States Administrative Law Judges out in the real world. Cheers!

You think that guy wouldn't have issued the threat if the ALJ was teleworking. Honestly, if someone is going to take a shot at me I would rather they do it in the building with the security guard and not my house.

my hope was they couldnt figure out where you live and you're there the most amount of time possible.

my hope was they couldnt figure out where you live and you're there the most amount of time possible. Unfortunately in the modern world that is an unreasonable expectation. Now a days if someone wants to find you, they can. Not fear mongering, just stating the horrible modern truth.

Now a days if someone wants to find you, they can. Not fear mongering, just stating the horrible modern truth. Too true. There are steps you can take to make it a little harder to be found, but the truth is out there … (Sorry, couldn’t resist the reference 😉). Fortunately, the vast majority of the claimants just want to be heard on why they should get benefits. They really have no interest in you other than as the gatekeeper in that process.

Not really. The actual article in Arizona Central (part of USATODAY, apparently) says "United States Social Security Administration Law judge." It's actually a demotion from "Administrative Law Judge" to SSA "Law judge." In any event, I have been called worse by reporters.

The Arizona Republic, the only statewide newspaper in Arizona) and its web version azcentral.com are owned by Gannett Inc., which also owns USA Today. Azcentral is famous for typos and awkward use of words, which probably explains "administration".

I wonder if this claimant's future requests for hearing automatically get assigned to a different judge.

I wonder if this claimant's future requests for hearing automatically get assigned to a different judge. I think that meets the definition of "The ALJ believes his or her participation in the case would give an appearance of impropriety." I had a case once where the claimant's treating notes said he told his therapist he was going to kill whichever ALJ was assigned to his case if he wasn't approved. Seems to me every ALJ could have recused themselves.

I now see that proboards has a new category of "Past Master" which has been bestowed upon me. It has a faint ring of "no longer with us" like another platform's designation of "Eternal Member" which it uses for those who have passed on. So, I think I will post once in a while, to show I am still on this side of the grass.

If you experience a threat, or see or hear something that threatens the safety of any SSA personnel, please notify your management staff immediately. Don’t ever underestimate the threat. Don’t try to decide for yourself the degree of likelihood that someone will act on their threatening words or escalate threatening behavior.
Contact Federal Protective Services. FPS has a National Toll Free Number: 1-877-4FPS-411 (1-877-437-7411).
Call 911 if you feel the threat of harm is imminent or you are or someone else is in danger.
Don’t be a “hero” and don’t underestimate the potential for violence. Let FPS and law enforcement investigate and determine the actual potential for harm. You may not choose to worry about your own safety, but what about that security officer and front desk staff who stand between the building entrance and your office?
If you see something (or hear something), say something.

my hope was they couldnt figure out where you live and you're there the most amount of time possible. Sadly with the internet it is relatively easy to find some people. Of course there are steps we can take to make it slightly harder. I recommend taking as many of those steps as you can to get your address off the internet as much as possible. Obviously having your info removed from the public search sites can be a never ending game of whack-a-mole, but I’d rather play that game than test the castle doctrine. Check your state/county/property tax assessing authority as well to see if you can have your address removed from the assessor’s website. If you’re in a bigger city and you’re Judge Kristen Smith, you’ll probably be okay. If you’re in a smaller city or your name is Judge Jedediah Krzyzewski, you’ll be much easier to locate. As mentioned above, most people won’t even consider something like that, but we have listings 12.00 for a reason and it only takes one person to take action.
