I'm getting a raise...YIPPEE!
PS I'm not the type to argue about how much more. I'm just grateful for 'more'. Lots of folks don't get that!

How is retirement? Do you feel you should’ve left sooner?

Hi there. Retirement is nice. I traveled in 2021 and 2022 on extended trips to see my adult sons, and I hiked ~ 1200 miles on the Pacific Crest Trail. I’m looking forward to lots more traveling this year—I have a kitted-out Sprinter van. I’m thinking of getting something a little bigger in which to go glamping, though. I’m glad I retired when I did. I’d been bumping heads with the bureaucracy for more than half of my tenure, and my HOCALJs were always aghast when I’d fire off outspoken and critical emails to the Chief Judge in Falls Church. Since many things about the agency were dysfunctional and needed fixing, and since all of the Regional Chief Judges and HOCALJs wouldn’t do anything in two of the three offices in which I worked, I’d write directly to him with some frequency. I also wrote to the Acting Commissioner and, several times, to Senators and Representatives. That practice does not create warm relations with TPTB. But happily, I got—for the most part—good results. I left feeling the Agency was better than I found it…which, hopefully, isn’t too fatuous on my part.
Thanks for asking, and Happy New Year! Thank you all for your service! Best, Tony

hamster - Are you willing to take a break from your travels to serve as Speaker of the House? I heard there is an immediate need to fill the position. I was today years old when I learned that the Speaker of the House does not need to be a member of Congress. However, you’d have to make inquiry of OPM as to whether the Speaker could be a retired annuitant.
