Technically, the applications closed at midnight on the day the 600th application was received. There has been some speculation that quite a few more than 600 may have been timely submitted before the curtain fell again. . . it all depends on whether the 600th app was received early or late on the second day.

If my memory is correct, in April 2008 Deputy Commissioner DeSoto announced that SSA hoped to hire 150 new ALJs for 2009. I suspect that may also depend on the approval of the 2009 budget. If anyone has more current information, please advise.
