It says he's a supervisory ALJ, so no contract protections.

OMHA ALJs are Supervisory ALJs (they supervise Legal Assistants and Attorney Advisors) and do not belong to a union or have a contract.

What comes to mind at first glance is - for heaven's sake, get malpractice and liability insurance that covers disciplinary proceedings.
I don't care if you're the smartest ALJ in the world, don't represent yourself.

Yeah I don't like paying for the insurance but it does help me sleep better, for sure. Was advised a while back to get it and since I'm the primary breadwinner in my family seemed like a smart move.

The address include those 3 W, then Career-Guard, then a dot com. Eight years and no claims. All I can really say is they take my money every year.

I have no financial interest in this company nor do I receive any referral fees or kickbacks of any sort. I'm sure if you look there are many companies that offer similar coverage. Never had to use their services and hope I never will, but it's reassuring to know it's there. wrightusa.com/FEPLI?gclid=CjwKCAjw8symBhAqEiwAaTA__BLIsK2e4RN182FLe0SrvmOGxnB640-B8o9Dqvg0hjttGx2pJ2ZfmRoC_c4QAvD_BwE

I have a policy as well. I expect if anything were to happen, AALJ would defend and do a great job, but just in case there were some reason to go into more than the union can/will handle I have insurance. I have the Option B policy. Having an event that would have liability exceeding $1 million is unlikely but it something happens, especially some need to defend my employment, I'd rather $200,000 in defense funds than $100,000. Premiums are pretty reasonable for the coverage, and they are reasonable because so few ever make a claim. It's like carrying a million dollar umbrella. My insurer has a precondition of $300,000 liability on home and auto. Umbrella is pretty cheap because so few liability claims exceed $300,000. Boosting homeowners liability from $100,000 to $300,000 cost me $40. So the risk of a homeowners liability claim exceeding $100,000 is apparently not that high.
